Code share flights & delays

I'm looking at booking flights next year from Belfast to LA and back from San Francisco to Belfast. An Expedia search is returning BMI flights with one of the US legs operated by United on a code share. I wondering if anyone can tell me if in the event of delays, is the United operated flight likely to be covered by the European regulations regarding the provision of food and accommodation? This is obviously worst case scenario planning

If operating OUT of Europe then yes.
If operating from the US back to Europe - you are on your own with UA.0 -
The United flight is London to LA, with Virgin operating the return from San Francisco, so that sounds like it might be ok then.0
