Can't offer advice about where you're going, but I visited Kingston Jamaica alone last summer and found the advice from other visitors and contributors/editors on TripAdvisor invaluable. I took out some pre-paid credit cards (£ and US$) (lots of advice on this website) and found that Thomas Global Exchange (Strand branch) were excellent (at the time) for service and exchange rates for J and US $.
Make sure you have all the relevant international phone codes to hand and make use of the local knowledge of hotel staff if you're staying at a good hotel. Consider taking (when out and about) a basic quad band 'phone pref. unlocked and use a local SIM (if cheaply available) rather than taking out an expensive looking iphone. Do as much research about the area, culture, customs etc and where you're going whilst there before you go.

Perhaps you could clarify if you mean Puerto Rico the Caribbean island or the resort in Gran Canaria?0
