Car Accident - A total loss - but I want to keep plate

I am in a catch 22 here, as they can't write to me until they have seen the car, meaning that they will have to collect it.
I think that the " can't " should read will not, there is no reason why they cannot inspect the vehicle at your home address.
They have agreed to pay out in the car, so their inspection isn't vitally important in the process.
I agree that you are in a bit of a catch 22 with it all.
You just need to be certain that the DVLA Retention criteria can be fulfilled before parting with the vehicle.0 -
Get a quick answer from your local DVLA Office by going there in person
https://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/contactus/localoffices/findnear.aspx
then stall the recovery company until you know if the DVLA will want to inspect the car.
If the car is a write off then there is no need for it to have a registration mark, besides the insurance company can always check with the VIN what the original mark was.
Admittedly it would have been easier if you put the plate on retention before the accident.
Nobody is perfect, except me of course
Please note: my opinions are mine alone, nobody asked me to have them, obliged me to have them or even coerced me to have them, they are mine but they are free, so if you want to share them I will not charge you for it!

i have spoken with the DVLA on the phone, and I need to send them a letter of no interest from the insurance company, and also the engineers report. The car can not be disposed of.
My insurers have said that when they take to car to free storage they will complete the report and send out the letters. So I just need to confirm with them that the car should be available for inspection by the DVLA. So far I have had nothing in writing - just phone calls.
Even the offer I was made for my car was on the basisi of similar car prices from the Auto Trader web site.0 -
Write to the insurers, special delivery, put it all down as "as agreed by telephone with xxxx on the xx/12/10 etc"
Won't help if they don't let you have the letter, or dispose of the car, but at least you can press for the cost of a replacement reg if they make you lose that one, and you'll have the agreement in writing.0 -
They are going to collect the car next tuesday.
The insurers are going to write to me, letting me know that they have no interest in the plate. And send a form. The insurers will send an engineer to see the car - who will send the report to them.
Once the claim is settled I will get the report which I can send to the DVLA, and they will decide whether they want to inspect the car.
Then i will get my plate on retention.
...long winded or what.0 -
