    i would just get a £200 car

stay away from corsa's 106's and saxos as they have high premiums due to lots of youngsters having them and crashing them and they get stolen etcetc

vw's have higher premiums becuase they cost more to fix

as someone said before a nissan micra is a good first car. However if size doesnt bother you you could go for a larger family car as they generally have lower premiums like a vectra, mondeo, primera citron zx's are pretty cheap as well. I always found larger cars cheaper to insure and cheaper to run but i did a lot of motorway miles which little engines tend not to like

when i was 17 i managed to pass my test and get my hands on a mk1 golf Gti as a first car for £300 it was worth way more but then 2 months later i managed to find out the laws of physics and aqua planing and gravity. I still today cannot work out what happened as i was doing probably 50 - 55 mph and got the front left wheel in a puddle on a left corner and then did a forwad roll over a hedge and landed in a field with some moo cows. I have clipped bigger puddle than that but never experienced that luckily from some stroke of luck i drove the car home as it landed on its wheels but it was a bit of an eye opener just had to get a new number plate

I would disagree with the comments about small low power cars = cheap insurance. It often doesn't work out that way. For example a car that is safe but boring such as a 1.8 Mondeo will probably surprise you

Get onto a random comparison site, confused.com is pretty good because you can put in multiple quotes while only entering your details once and try a bunch of random mainstream cars, here are some suggestions to try:

1.2 or 1.3 Ford Fiesta / Toyota Yaris / Nissan Micra to represent the small hatchback

1.6 Ford Focus / Vauxhall Astra / Honda Civic for the mid size

1.8 Ford Mondeo / Vauxhall Vectra / Toyota Camry for the large size.

Avoid any special editions or sports versions (SRI, RS, ST, XR, GSI or anything with a T marked after the engine size) to get a fairish comparison.
