Who pays when workman breaks stuff

I recently needed 2 transam window locking mechanisms changed. The window man came round while I was out(I know, but he's a friend of a friend) and repaired them but broke one of the leaded transam double glazed units.

He replaced the window, however, has charged me for it.

Am I liable to pay or shoul he?

If he broke them by accident, he should pay.
If it was a risk he advised you off, and they broke as part of the job, and there was no way to avoid it to carry out what he was doing, you should either tell him to go ahead and pay him if it happens, or stop the job if you don't want to take the risk. If it's somewhere in the middle.....

My guess is it will revolve around whether he showed 'reasonble' standards of competence. If a skilled tradesman would have found it difficult to repair it without the doing the breakage then you pay but if it was down to carelessness/negligence then don't pay.
You probably need to get an independent skilled/qualified person in to give an informed opinion on that ( in writing)

    all depends.
if there was a chance of breaking summat in doing a repair, (and therefore chargeable). he should have told you so, before hand.

If I damage something in a customers home that is not part of the job I am doing, then I would pay for repair/replacement.

That is why all good and proper tradesmen have to pay out so much for insurance of one sort or another.
