Looking for a rescue dog - Notts/Derby border - rescue places?

Have emailed the very local one but they seem much more cat oriented - waiting for them to reply if they've got any dog suitable (looking for something about lab-sized, not a staffie - sorry I just don't trust their history with the ownership they're attracting, but must be ok with cats)... really really don't want to go to the RSPCA since I disagree with a lot of their behaviour and fundraising methods and one of their door-to-door chuggers was incredibly rude to me saying "no thank you" (started screeching "SO DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT INJURED ANIMALS" to try to shame me in front of the neighbours... just as my feline amputee decided to limp past the door - like yeah, look at that one - I'm really heartless to them).
Anyone know of any decent rescue places in either Notts or Derby (we're in the middle on the A52 corridor)? There's no Dogs Trust anywhere local - cos they were the first place I looked for.

Try Babbington Rescue i've heard some good things about them. They have also been in the local paper recently appealing for help due to the amount of abandoned dogs they have at the moment http://www.babbington-rescue.org.uk/Virgin CC=£2652, Next= [STRIKE]£102.88,[/STRIKE] Very=£475.60, Natwest=£800, Sainsburys CC=£1777.02, Lloyds CC=£498.29, Lloyds Loan= £13,946.18, Car=£4000Total = [STRIKE]£26,147.23[/STRIKE] £23,849.09:eek:0

We had our Collie from Second Chance in Derby. But there are loads of other places, just google 'Dog Rescue Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire' and I'm sure you'll get a long list to sift through."Your life is what your thoughts make it"

Went up to Babbington this afternoon in the end - now waiting on a homecheck for poor Brian (who's poor cos he's down as Brain on the website) on page 4 - bless him!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

Blimey, you dont hang around do you! Very best of luck with Brian - I saw Collette too and thought she would be the one you went for.

oooh dizziblonde! I saw Brian (aka Brain!) when I went to get my dog the other day! How marvellous that you are going to give him a home thank you so much you've made my day! I cam on here to post about Babbington for you but you've already been how great!
I posted on this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2944980 as I wanted a dog (I had my poor old ancient terrier pts on the 10th dec and couldnt go on any longer without a dog). I got a lovely terrier from them and she has been excellent so far, not a peep out of her the last 2 nights and is calm, comes when you call her, walks nice on the lead and is placid, when we went ot pick her she was in with another terrier and we did consider them both but the other one was bossy and I think it would have been a mistake as she was picking up bad habits!
I cant believe my luck, I hope you have a loyal friend and lots of happy times together, Babbington is brilliant, the staff are so nice and kind and do a brilliant job, the shop is excellent too and I got everything I needed at good prices. A brush was only £1 and they were £6 in kennelgate!
The dog warden was nice, she had a cuppa with us and was the one who picked up our dog when she was wandering around so it was nice to hear about her background.
Please post piccies when he gets home, I'm so excited for you!
Thank you for rehoming a rescue dog, apparently there are not many people coming forward to rehome due to the recession and babbington say its very quiet at the mo and people are even bringing rehomed dogs back for no particular reason
Well done
ps I got a crate and found it to be invaluable , they look like prisons but I read up on them and the dogs like them when used properly and they recommend them sell them at Babbington (I borrowed one from a friend)Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000

This is only my opinion - but I wouldn't particularly recommend babbington personally - they act as the pound for the area, and they clearly are more like a pound than a rescue in how they operate - which probably means they home a lot of dogs, but they home dogs after holding them for seven days, and it seems they often know very little about them - they also recommend some outdated training aids and methods. Their dogs are not routinely neutered before rehoming, though you do get a discount voucher, but it is for one particular vets as far as I recall... However, that doesnt mean you can't get a lovely dog from there...
If you want to see how a better rescue operates, go to the Mayflower at Bawtry - a little bit of a trek for you, but their dogs are kept in lovely conditions, carefully assessed, and there is ample long term support for new owners after adoption. With babbington, you have seven days to decide if you want to return the dog or not, after that it is your problem.
Also, the dogs from the Mayflower are neutered before adoption, but the rehoming fee is less than the one charged by babbington....
Looking on the babbington website, some dogs say 'free speying' - others dont - wonder how many of those will ever be speyed or neutered, and how many will end up being bred and adding to the existing problem...0 -
Yeah I get what you're saying FC - we intentionally looked at one of their longer-termers in the hope of getting a slightly more "known" quantity and tried to make sure he wasn't a bolter when we took him for a walk or anything. This guy's un neutered but we do have a decent vet who isn't astronomically priced a couple of streets away from us (strangely the cat's favourite person since he shoved a thermometer up her backside) so we'll just take him there the other side of payday when he's settled in a bit.
I found the approach to neutering a bit off to be honest - most rescues it's get 'em in, get 'em snipped asap!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

I see what you're saying FC but I think because they are a charity they have to do the best they can with very limited resources...
I found them very good and would personally recommend them to anyone who want to adopt a dog.Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000
