Problems getting internet connection

Hi Folks
I have wireless broadband via Virgin Media, and can connect my desktop and lap top to the internet without much of a problem.
However, last week I bought another lap top (for the kids), and have problems connecting to the internet. Sometimes it connects but very often it does not. It even looses the connection when I am in the internet.
Could you please advice what I could do to solve the problem?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

What's the distance between where the kids are using the laptop and the wi-fi base station? Wi-fi won't do more than a couple of thin walls/floors reliably.
Also, check if there's a nearby wi-fi on the same channel and move what you are using to avoid interference0 -
Hi
Thanks for your reply.
The kids sit quite close to the main connection with the lap top. I don't think the distance is the problem because I use my lap top upstairs to browse on the internet, wheres the wireless connection is based downstairs in my living room.
Thanks in advance for any further advice provided.0 -
Have you tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter in your laptop.0

Sorry to hijack thread but I am having the same problem recently, nothing new except more doors closed probably. How do I check channel and how do I change it please? Nearby network showing stronger than mine. Can I buy some kind of usb to boost the strength of signal? Confused... Thanks for any help. The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

check wifi channel useage in your vicinity with inSSIDer
http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider
this will show you what routers are active and then you can pick a channel (via your router's web-based interface) which is the least interfered with in your location.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
