Weird issue with payments on 24th

I'm with Santander, I made to card payments on 24th, 1 for £40 to talk talk, 1 for £20 to Orange, payments got to of my available balance there and then and I thought no more of it.

Yesterday I received £60 refunded to my account with no explanation, I phoned Santander who looked through authorisations and told me that both payments got approved but had been unclaimed, I contacted both talk talk and Orange who inform me both have been paid.

Any idea what's went wrong? Santander tell me both payments have now not been taken of my balance.

I've highlighted the likely explanation as to the source of the problem.

If you pay by debit card, once the payment got approved it will get taken from your available balance immediately (the payment is reserved or ear-marked) and gets properly booked when presented some two or so days later, then the sum comes out of the (proper) balance.

Sometimes debits are presented late. After four or six days, if the monies are not called in, the ear-mark will fall off reverting to the previous available balance. This has happened in your case, due to the very long Christmas break.

I do not think you have been given a “refund”, the ear-mark in the available balance has fallen off. Don’t worry, it will be booked tomorrow. These things do turn up.

    No need for Santander bashing.

Your explanation is fully on the mark. But as the Bank have returned the money to available after just one full working day ............ you surely wouldn't want to give them much credit? :p

    Agreed. Uncalled for.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Disagree. Obviously another thing they didn't test before going live with their new system.
