best time for supermarket reductions?

hi all!

i would really like to lower my food spends this year!

used to shop in sainsburys and morrisons on way home from work so got the occasional pack of meat a bit cheaper. switched to asda as found it cheaper.

heard others talking about v cheap reductions just before closing and as i do lots of batch cooking i would like to stock up on mince etc... when cheap :)

went to asda on tue an hr before it shut and got 30p mince, 10p sausages etc.... :j

would like to do this regularly but it is normally a 24hr store. so does anyone know what time asda tend to do the v cheap reductions on 24hr days? assume its not 11pm as cant imagine many people shopping then (although may be wrong!)

many thanks :D

  • They seem to do reductions during the day, and I find that after 8pm is a good time to find the extra reductions. We have 24 hour Asda and Sains. I often pick DH up after 9pm and have got some good meat deals at that time.

Unfortunately, they don't always reduce all items at the same time, so bread, meat and vegs aren't always well reduced together. So if you have a bit of time for a wander around you may pick up bits from each range.
  • I think id depends on each individual store. My local ones sometimes has lots reduced after 8pm.

I'll move this to the Grocery Shopping Board, where the experts will be able to help you further.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

I find the best days of the year for reductions are now and new years day - if the store is open. We got loads last year 99p steak - about 4 of them lol. There was big packs of mince for 99p - lean mince as well, on Monday just gone.

Well it can vary from 1 store to another and from 1 county to another

but if you shop regulary in 1 store at various times eg lunch time, or in the evening then you get an idea, speaking form experience if theres only 2 items of a certain line they wouldnt get reduced till later on whereas if there was a huge quantity of a certain line then it might get reduced say in the morning so theres a chance it would sell or half would sell by when the second lost of reductions is to be done

    It varies

My town has 2 Co-op stores (one in the centre one just outside) and even they are different. The one in town only takes 25% off until 9pm where as the other will take 75% off at 11am if it is going out of date that day.

It depends on the fresh food dept manager. I work for a supermarket and we do our reductions at lunchtime with a third off first, then it gets reduced further in the day. If something costs £2 to start with, its reduced to £1.35, then 75p, then 20p. Depending on who is the duty manager at the end of the day and how much stuff is left, they do a blitz reduction of 5p an item. Got 6 packs of party food for 30p for the lot (they are £3 each normally!) Have done 3 teas worth so far and got enough for another tea's worth in the freezer. Went down nicely with a 5p bag of mixed salad leaves. Brilliant 10p teas!

The next store to us does the reductions at 5pm. I remember coming home from my parents just before Christmas and nipped in the store and bought some reduced Quorn things for 40p each.

Yesterday, at work, we had so many pork leg crackling joints in the back chiller that the store manager reduced them to £3 a joint - they were about £7-11 each and all had decent dates on them - 7th Jan. So you could bought one and not worry about putting them in the freezer if you want to cook it NY weekend.

I didn't buy one as not keen on roast pork.

It might be an idea to start making a note of the whoopsies you get and the time/day you've been instore - this might start to build up a bit of a ref guide for your own local store. Also, do you know anyone who works in the store? Perhaps if you go in on the same day/time each week, you could go to the same cashier and try and find out from them what time the best reductions are - I always say 'if you don't ask you don't get' ...just remember to ask with a smile, a little pleasentry goes a long way with people. Best of luck x

I went to our local Asda at 4.30pm on Christmas eve, and was gutted to see people with trolleys full of things like melons for 10p!!!!! I missed the lot!
I am going today at 4pm, and make sure that I have time to just hang around waiting til they reduce various bits.
As for regular reductions, i normally go to Asda at around 7.30am as they reduce things like yoghurts, eggs etc. They aren't the big reductions, but do things like..... if a 6 pack of muller corner yogs has broken packaging, they go in a bag marked down to 50p. Eggs with one broken will go down to maybe 50p for 6. I buy a lot of our treats this way. Like more expensive drinky yoghurts that the kids love for lunch boxes etc.
