Meal Planning Meltdown

  • Thanks everyone! I am going to wait until after the weekend then do an inventory of what I have got to get back on track.

We are going out tonight without the kids for a meal (very rare occurence!) so we dont need any tea. The boys need feeding so I am going to rummage in the freezer to find them something to eat.

On second thoughts, might just do them some pasta, DS has just said he's not really hungry but cant drop him off at the babysitters not having had any tea!

Oh I've planned.... then decided I couldn't be bothered to cook half of it!!! :o Well I am on holiday :p

Then the kids decide to stay at their mum's a couple of nights extra - fine with us but that alters the meal plan as some meals I've planned for two of us and some for all of us.
    sounds like me :D

I've had the kids thing going on too, though mine are (allegedly) grown up, they keep disappearing 'to visit friends for a couple of hours' then re-appear 2 days later *roll-eyes*

so we're finally having our Christmas dinner tonight, if I can be bothered to cook it :p
  • Meals are a nightmare here, what with both DH being fixated about what he likes and DS eating from a very limited menu :o I am getting tired of cooking 3 meals every night, and at the moment, of both DS and DH overeating on rubbish like sausage rolls (DS) and chocolates (DH).

I do meal planning but it's from day to day and based on what we have in the fridge, with the aim of having to buy milk/bread/fresh fruit only
    Keep calm and carry on

I have my meal plan on an Excel spreadsheet; as my health is very "up and down" I have to be reasonably flexible (f'r instance, it might be something that requires a lot of preparation, and I'm not well enough to sit in front of the hob that day), so I have colour coding.

It works thusly: I have a date column, a meal column, and a "notes" column (for things like Mr LW is on early or late shift that day, or it's a Bank Holiday type of thing).

Past meals are in black - I can look back and see that we're not having the same meal over and over too often. "Set in concrete" plans are in blue - this is often "special" days, eg Mr LW has requested nut loaf with roasties for New Years Day. Flexible meals are in red, so I can, f'r instance, say "I'm not well enough to sit and stir soup today, we'll swap it with the next day's egg'n'chips".

I also have a sheet with freezer and cupboard inventories, so when something's used it gets taken off, and shopping gets added on.

I know it sounds a bit complicated, but it works for us. :o

i try to be organised and have a meal plan but i find it difficult to stick to, as i dont always fancy what ive planned(or hubby doesnt) so ive started making a list of meals but not allocating a day , i find this works better for us.

That's exactly what I do...i just have to make sure i use any salad, veg that needs using up and ensure i use any left overs too
