haha yeah I'll probably do the same when I leave home! It's a shame about ebay though, I've got some nice things from there, but too much tatt to make me want to buy from there again! think I'll hit the car boot sales this year instead so I can see what I'm buying!

If it's a simple hemline, (not a frill or bias cut) it's really easy to take a hem up.

I'd concentrate on finding a dress you really like at the right price and shorten it. As long as you take your time and press with the iron as you shorten it, it's quite easy, especially on a maxi where the hem is less obvious anyway.

You can hand sew the hem or use "Wunderweb" (iron-on hemming tape), which is even quicker!

ETA Some cotton type maxis shrink the first time they're washed, so maybe factor that into any alterations too.

thanks buyitall! I'll have a look in there also :)
  • Apparently the Next girls range is great for petite ladies...they do sizes up to age 16, plus no VAT on kid's clothes!

I just had a look on the asos site, there's a sequin-topped maxi dress for just £11 in the Petite Sale section..... then I saw the model wearing it was 5'9.5"

I couldn't have worn it anyway ... short, big boobs, need to keep shoulders covered.

You could try ASOS - I bought a maxi dress for £8 today. If you are looking for something summery this is a lovely petite maxi, reduced from £40 to £20:

That's a nice dress but why do stores say something is Petite when it's not? It says there that the model is 5ft 7in and you can see the dress goes down to her feet. How can they call that petite? :(

For example, the ASOS site says:
Trend led and directional; our ASOS PETITE collection offers the latest fashion-forward finds. Choose from chunky knit cardigans, ‘60s inspired shift dresses and chic skinny jeans, taken from our main range clothing line and perfectly cut to fit women of 5'3"/1.60m and under.
Yet they use a model 5ft 7in tall and you can see the dress goes all the way to the floor so it would swamp someone 5'3" or under.

I must say I did have a look on ASOS and indeed noticed the fact that the model is really tall compared to me and you could only just see her toes in this dress I liked :( bit of a shame, but some lovely things on there!

thanks for that idea missbishi! I'll definately look into it! I've even bought tesco kids shoes before! some cute dolly pumps that I wore on a 'school girl fancy dress' night, hehe! :)
