Travel insurance

Hi

I wonder if anyone here can help. My daughter (26) has travelled to Australia and is now in Melbourne. She took out travel insurance in September for 3 months, which got her there - she went overland - but this has now run out. She's planning to stay in Oz for some time in order to fund her passage back, but is aware that she is no longer covered for anything. The company who arranged the original insurance say that as she doesn't have a return ticket, they aren't able to help. She took out their longest-term policy as it was, but she needed a company that covered her for Iran and Pakistan, so that ruled out a lot of. She needs something to cover her personal possessions and ideally some kind of medical cover. Any suggestions.

As her trip and insurance is no longer starting in the UK, that will rule out the UK companies.

Try https://www.worldnomads.com or https://www.worldwideinsure.com but they may be expensive.

Does she have the correct visa to allow her to work in OZ? I understand they are very strict on that stuff there.
  • Yes, she's got a working visa - which I think is for a year.

  • Thanks Luci - I think that is what the previous insurers were saying. Once her existing insurance expired, and since she was living outside the UK - they couldn't help. Since she's going to have to find herself a flat then possibly she can arrange home insurance in Oz. She's mostly concerned about her camera and laptop. I gather that as far as medical insurance is concerned, there are reciprical arrangements in Australia. If she plans to travel overland back home again, she'll have to find travel insurance in Oz. I imagine that is possible.

She may not be able to get travel insurance in Oz if she is not a resident and is only there temporarily. She would need to check with the provider.

The UK may have reciprocal health care arrangements with Oz, but that would not cover repatriation to the UK should it become necessary. She really needs to have good travel insurance in place. She should have been able to get a backpacker's policy for the whole year before she left the UK.
