Is Wickes Best Value New Kitchen?

  • Hi, I re-fitted my kitchen in 2009. I used Wickes after spending ages looking for the ideal combination of quality, construction and price. In my travels throughout England, where ever we stayed we went looking for kitchens (how sad are we!).
Still it all came down to Wickes. The material used is well compressed and heavy (a good sign of how much material is used in its manufacture) as opposed to the flimsy chipboard of Homebase. The drawer fittings are robust, as are the hinges. Not a single piece of hardboard in sight!!

I did my own designing and planning and everything fitted like a glove.

I sourced an oak work top during my travels, which knocks B&Q & Homebase out of the game. It was delivered (300 miles) at no extra cost.

I waited until Wickes had the right sale on - a straight 60% off all kitchens.
I fitted everything and brought the specialists in when required. Kitchen fitter for the work tops, plumber and sparks. Though I say it myself, the overall finish is fantastic, better than £10/15k jobs I have seen.

You should have seen the rubbish that George Wimpey put in that I ripped out - matchwood!!
Cost for everything including trades £4100 for a 9 unit base system & 6 wall units. This also included a new sink & taps. New Smeg hob & hood - all off the internet.
I even have a 300 base unit fitted internal drawer system that they delivered in error. They didn't want it back as I only have a 400 unit that it could go in. So, it;s there in case one of the children could use it sometime in the future.

I've had a quote from wickes, the normal 50% off with then a further 15% off that followed by an extra 14% off all that :rotfl:

I expect Benchmarx to still come out cheaper than all this messing about & yes the kitchens are exactly the same plus you dont have the 4 week wait for delivery with benchmarx.

oh and they do have a planning service.

Is benchmarx exactly the same as Wickes (i.e. they supply wickes) or just very similar?

Also if they are trade do I have to start claiming to be a developer? (although it may be truer than I first though, I've just dicovered I have a huge loft :-))

Just to add, having looked at the benchmarx site I have to agree that their kitchens so look very nice. Given they are trade I don't suppose they offer a planning service?

On average how much cheaper are they than Wickes? Will I still have to pay VAT if it is for trade?
  • hi bazman as for granite worktops 30mm is fine. where are you based ? the cost of the tops will depend on what edge profile you want and sink type you want an if you will be wanting upstands, cills. star galaxy is a nice colour, black with like a gold fleck in it. silestone is another option its a quartz top lots of colours to pick from.

My mum is in the process of moving to France and says the kitchens there are usually free standing (and go with the owner when they move) she's been using this site http://forums.french-property.com/ to help her, I've had a quick look round but can't see any rules about posting items for sale, you may get more there than ebay if they allow it. Unfortunatly she's just been and bought her kitchen from ikea or i'd of sent her your way for a look
