Travel Insurance advice needed

Hope this isn't silly question but we are planning a holiday in summer which we are putting together ourselves, not a package. At what point do we need to get our insurance? We are going to book the flights soon and the hotels and car hire later. Should we get insurance before flights or does it not matter?

Also any recommendations for insurance to cover this sort of holiday where flights and hotels are booked separately? The holiday is to USA.

Concerned about issues of last year with the ash cloud and the BA strikes.

Insurance should be taken out as soon as the travel is booked, the flights in your case. Then, depending on the policy, you will be covered for any insured peril that happens after you take it out, such as volcanic ash or industrial action.

It is travel insurance, not package holiday insurance, but read the policy carefully to ensure it provides the cover you need.

Also do not go with the cheapest you can find as you will find that the excesses are usually high and the cover may not be as comprehensive as other policies.
