I'm not sure I agree Sarabe, providing we are talking about a pup. I think if you can teach them young that it's a normal course of events for people to take stuff then (usually) give it back it's a good thing. It's a darn sight harder to teach them when they are older....0

has anyone been watching 'its me or the dog'? its back on tv again and I like it, it seems that dog training is quite basic really, reward when good, ignore when bad

A dog of any age can resource guard. The reason behind it is usually that they have had things taken from them so whilst it might seem like the right thing to do it will make the problem worse if your dog (or puppy) has a prediposition to resource guard.

I love watching "It's Me Or The Dog" in one of her episodes she helped with this problem by teaching the dog the swap and leave command. She would throw something like another toy down next to the dog and the dog would drop what it was he was holding, Victoria picked that item up and threw it down next to the dog and he dropped the new item that Victoria had in her hands. So when the dog has something you do not want him to have instead of trying to take it from his mouth you drop something more interesting like a treat down next to him and he should drop what it is you want. When you do this you must do the commands as well because eventually you should be able to take what it is you want from your dog without the fear of him snapping at you. The commands if i can remember were drop it as soon as you dropped the new item and swap it when he dropped the item you want to take from him.
I'm no good at explaining this very well but if you go to her website then you may get the tips from there and she also has her own forum with plenty of dog trainers on there to help.

He was a pup when I did it, I'd give him a bone, let him get into it then take it away with a "Thank You". Then he would be praised and I'd give it back. He's a good little dog really, he was fairly simple to train although his recall is shocking

Absolutely the best way in my opinion personally, when they are young. My poochie didn't become mine until he was 14 months and was a shocker about giving things up.pulliptears wrote: »He was a pup when I did it, I'd give him a bone, let him get into it then take it away with a "Thank You".
