Can't setup Lenovo Veriface.

I've just bought a Lenovo G550 (thanks to those who recommended it on this and other MSE forums- far better than my ****** ex Vista machine) but can't get the initial Veriface scan to complete.
I've tried it in various lighting conditions but it just keeps scanning - vertical & horizontal line & crosses on the eyes. After a couple of minutes I gave up. I don't know how long it's supposed to take but I would have thought it would be quicker.
Any suggestions on getting it to work or is it more of a gimmick that's not worth using?
