It's charlies BIG annual Poodle cut

I have a large pure white extremely long haired rescue cat named Charlie.
We took him in when he was 7 years old from CPL.
This cat has fur you would never imagine , I'm sure he has sheep in his family tree!
This cat was never groomed and has even defeated the Furminator
His fur is like nylon , his personal habits are not nice and every year about now he ends up with matts under his belly and legs.
We have got to the stage where we can groom him over the top half of his body but underneath is a no go area ever!
First time I took him to the vets to be dematted they tutted a bit when I brought him in .. that was until they tried to dematt him without a sedative!
Now every year Charlie goes in.. they knock him out and shave him.
He is left with a lovely mane , furry boots and a fluffy tail.
He comes back like a spring lamb and I swear he has a big grin on his face :)
Anyway , as this is MSE, just to let anyone in the same position or who may have aquired the offspring of this hairy cat, the difference in price between Charlies poodle cut and the price I used to pay for dematting , grooming etc is a saving of over £60 .
The poodle cut lasts for over 8 months where as the dematting and grooming used to last 4 months at the most and that was with me trying to groom him and large amounts of blood loss on my part
:money:

Why don't you try to introduce him very very gently to the idea of being brushed underneath? Start off as soon as he's been dematted so the fur doesnt tug on his skin.

Its considered animal cruelty in some circles to allow an animal to get so dematted a vet has to knock him out.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

    :D Will supply photos

    As for animal cruelty?
this is a rescue cat of 7 years old .. not a kitten who is used to grooming from day one..
The reason he was a rescue cat was the fact that he was an intact male who's owners could not cope .
Please do not try to imply that I don't know how to look after cats.
I have had 7 rescue cats in my life .Of these one was 14 and blind , one had FIP , two we had for 13 plus years and the other one I have is a Van cat that no one else would take because they have the habit of giving owners 'love bites' and can be pretty unruly

cavework, you have my sympathies for the blood loss. :D

Dippy Cat (who spent the first 18 months of his life in a rescue) sort of panics when being stroked unless he is in control of the stroking. 4 gentle hand strokes down his back is the max he can deal with now without striking out at someone. This is improvement, when I first got him, he couldn't abide a single stroke. I am just grateful he is a short haired cat who keeps himself neat and tidy. Like you we can't brush him - although if we hold the brush out he will walk under it and rub against it but if you move the brush to brush him - taking the control of it away from him, he freaks and either runs or attacks. This is despite years and years of attempts to get him used to being brushed/stroked on a daily basis.

@ welshmoneylover - Sometimes it's the cat not the owner that is the "cause" of the problem and the owner has to deal with it as best as they can - in this case it's the annual poodle clip. cavework does this to save the cat the discomfort and problems that being matted can cause. It is not cruelty in any shape or form. With a cat like this that just can't take being groomed, cruelty would be allowing the mats to develop and then not doing anything about it. Her vets know what the cat is like and know this is the only way to deal with it - vets do not just put animals under an anaesthetic willy-nilly, they only do it if there is a genuine need to do so.
