Well, it worked best part of 12 hours yesterday and restarted just fine this morning so I think we can say case closed, no further action required.

    Thanks to all who commented

it was milky coffee with two sugars :D

I did think about rinsing it through with clean water but am in "not tempting fate" mode now especially as it seems to be working normally

I recently took the rinse approach when my excessively expensive PC keyboard (Enermax Aurora Premium) took a full glass of vodka+redbull..... unsure whether it would have worked with normal drying but after a rinse & dry out it was certainly dead as a dodo.... even after disasssembly and a full isopropyle alcohol rub down :(

Fortunately on that occasion the clumsy individual who spilt it was very apologetic and bought me a replacement

I probably won't be 'rinsing' anything again

if it hadn't worked I'd have done the rinsing (on the nothing to lose principle) but I just couldn't bring myself to pour water into laptop that was working

Time will tell whether that was the right decision but looking (cautiously) good so far

I've got the worse ever dose of flu which resulted in me fainting last night.

Sadly I was just taking a mouthful of coffee when this happened and the rest of the cup ended up over my laptop. OH closed the lid (which shuts it down) and once the paramedics had gone I tried to restart it but got no joy. It was then I noticed coffee dripping out of various covers on the underneath.

Still feeling crap I popped the battery and left it. FF to lunchtime today and without much hope I put the battery back in and pressed go and yippee it started and seems to be working normally.

apart from getting all my stuff off the HD (which is happening as I type this) does anyone have any suggestions for improving the likelihood of it continuing to work long term?

No. Just get all the data off the drive as quickly as you can then just use it to surf the net with only and maybe online e-mails. As I'm pretty sure it will die.

Turning it on after the spillage is a mistake as it can cause a short.

It may work for a while but start playing up.

Reason I mention this is because at work we had a laptop come in from a user (In house user not the public) and we had a look over it. Underside felt funny and it wasn't working properly. Felt like some liquid had been spilt on it. We asked the manager who owned it. He denied it, but we knew it was coffee and that he'd spilt it over or had sat the laptop in the spilt coffee. We could of got the parts from HP and replaced the motherboard ourselves but had a deal with HP and they send an engineer out. He came, we told him nothing. He took the case off, then said "This has been spilt in coffee". We said "Yep, sorry we just needed that confirmed by an independent so didn't say anything." We needed it confirmed as he was being, the manager, an !!!!. Told our higher management what we'd said about the coffee etc, but we now had it confirmed by an independent HP engineer so now he was in the !!!! again :)

Our cover didn't cover that so he didn't replace the motherboard. But laptop was pretty much dead.
