Upgrade my PC?

I currently have a Medion 3000 Powerplus Desktop PC which I have had since 2002
The system currently has 512MB installed on it
I was looking at whether to buy a new pc or upgrade the memory I have on my exisitng one. To help me to do this I used crucial which scnas my system and suggests memory upgrades. However I am a little lost. The site tells me I have 4 slots with two currently empty, yet the two slots that are being used are 128MB and 4GB
Any one know what this means?
Also the site tells me I can upgrade to 4096MB memory using 1GB slots, so I am assuming I can buy 4 x 1GB?
Many thanks in advance to those who help

It cannot make any sense upgrading a computer that old, 4Gb (4x1) your looking at £135! you might as well just burn some money!
you can get a decent machine for £400 and a budget one for £2500 -
Guessing that you have XP?
Another 512MB would be fine, any more is not really needed for XP, certainly not 4GB.
Clearing all unwanted programs etc will probably give you a speed boost.
Others here will be able to point you to the threads with the spring clean procedure.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
2002? -Definitely new PC time.
Any money you spend now 'might' prolong its life upto a year (assuming PSU or something else critical doesn't fail), if you can do that and would be happy with 1ish years extra use for the money fine.....
I'd be looking for a new PC tho ->spend £100 to get an extra year out of an old one vs spend <£500 for a brand new fast one you can be confident will last at least 5 years for basic stuff.0 -
Seconded. I'm all for upgrading computers but there comes a point where its not worth putting the money into it. Because your memory is now superceeded by two generations, it is expensive to buy compared to DDR3. It'd cost you over 1/3 of what it would to buy an entry spec tower which would be several times quicker. An entry level one shouldn't cost more than around £250 for the tower alone and have 2GB or more and a 250GB HDD or more.0

have a go at the thread above, to be honest spending a few hours cleaning it up is the MSE way to go,
however if you can not get it quick enough (or just cant be arsed) then i also agree its really not worth spending any money on it if it is 8 nearly 9 years old and you would be better getting a new systemDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
All, many thanks for your replies, appreciated. I think your right, new machine it is!Work hard play hard......0
