Laptop Memory Query

My laptop is a three year old inspiron 6400. It currently has 1.5gb ram in it. Can I replace the two chips with two 2gb ones to make it 4gb???

This website suggests the maximum is 2gb?

My daughter has just got an acer laptop which has 4gb.

I dont want to spend on getting a new laptop, just want to make it a bit faster and possibly put windows seven on it when I get a copy.:rotfl:

If you want it faster, look at what you have running, a memory upgrade won't make any difference

You only need 2GB. Replace the 512MB one with a 1GB one. I disagree with "closed" - memory is one of the cheapest speed upgrades you can fit. There does however become a point at which the increases are less noticable. The sweet spot for Vista and Windows 7 is 2GB.

You'll not only notice the difference from the extra 512MB but as the DIMMS are matched sizes, it'll run in dual channel mode which will increase the throughput by about 80%.
  • TThanks I will replace it with a 1gb chip. When I bought the laptop in 2008 it had 1gb. I added the extra 512mb the year after.

You will notice far less speed difference than whatever you noticed when you upgraded to 1.5. Disabling defender realtime scanning, and installing a lightweight antivirus like avast, or backing up and restoring to factory settings will have a far greater effect than adding another 512.

  • I already have avast on. I have cleared my cache and browers and removed programs that are not used but I am still going to add the extra memory. to me its worth it in the long run.:D

internet cache doesn't affect speed, nor do programs that aren't running at startup

Download and install IOBit Smartdefrag and run it. It'll speed up file access on your hard drive. I had one customer whose hard disk was so fragmented, IE took 5 minutes to load. By the time it'd been defragged that was down to 10 seconds.
