What changes to your food shopping in 2011

This may be better suited to the food board, if so please move for me :)

What changes will you making in view of increase in food prices etc??

More OS style ...?? Less luxuries??

Planning for the next couple of months right now, going to be cutting down big time

Cutting out on extra's - 1 pack of Solero a week for kids, 1 pack of stilton a month, pricier tea's for the teapot

Shopping less, more whoopsie shopping for basics - bread/eggs

Cutting right down really! £10 a week is a bit unnecessary for me, so going to see if I can get it down a little further.

What are your food shopping changes for the new year?? :D

  • Due to us having another baby and due to the amounts in our cupboards were choosing to cut down. I really think we would have enough minus bread and milk to keep us going for at least a month.
Were needing to buy some bedroom furniture for the childrens rooms as we may need to be swapping them round as weve a girl and a boy already.
We really dont spend that much on food to be honest and DH takes leftovers to work. One thing that simply must be cut back on both for money and health is the amount of fizzy drinks we drink.
I wish everyone luck on cutting down

    Hi Rebekah,

Due to the current financial climate we are already cutting back on luxuries and generally watching the pennies more than we did before. One thing I do intend to do is to stock up on vatable, non perishable items before the January VAT increase.

As the thread is speciific to food shopping, rather than Old Style I'll move it over to the Food Shopping & Groceries board once you've had some input from Old Stylers.

  • stop buying fresh orange juice! its very expensive!!
dont buy things like grapes and strawberrys which often dont get eaten in time and go off!
dont buy loads of crisps and chocolate....this will also be good for my waistline!!
    the list is endless...
basically dont buy anything unecessary that you can live without but dont make myself miserable in the process!!
  • Generally I will be trying even further to stretch the budget(which is lower, aiming for 2k, 1 adult 2 children-but 2 months of the year 2 adults) but more to increase the quality of foods consumed, backed up by GYO.

I echo the fizzy drinks...I am a terror for coke!

I'm currently working on my Tesco basket, for delivery 3rd of Jan, to get as much as I can pre 4th, things like the £5 boxes of 52 wash Daz(even though I have a huge stock of liquid), plus bin bags, toilet rols etc. I'll put every penny I have spare into the shop. May be pennies saved in some ways, but pennies mean pounds.

I'll also try stock up on oats, lentils, any grain based items as the prices are going mad on these basics and I go through a lot.

I don't think there's much more we can cut back on as regards the items we actually purchase; but I might just be serving slightly smaller portions generally, to make it a longer time til I need to buy stuff again.

There's only the two of us here, and we're both on a mission to lose weight, so it'll serve two purposes.;)

I'm going to shop around more (instead of buying everything from one shop for convenience) plus I've set myself the challenge in January to only buy something if it is BOGOF, half price or value range.
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

    December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.10

    for 2011 I'm planning the following -
-cash only for shopping, once it's gone, we buy no more!
-grow our own veg - this will start when it's a little warmer!
-buy an extra chest freezer so we can make the most of whoopsied items
-use up all left overs - we do try this already but find that some bits do end up being trown out
    -shop without the kids
    -two cheap meals per week

Need to stick to budget this year and shopping is usually what sends us into our overdraft!

I am going to start taking £80 in cash for shopping, saving any spare for extras through week and taking a calculator. Also making more effort with the list so I don't forget things and have to go back 2 or 3 times and end up buying things I don't need.

I am determined on doing the following:

    Only using cash, NO CARDS.
Putting just my weekly cash allowance in my purse and NO MORE
Writing down (have chart stuck to inside of kitchen cupboard) what has been spent on daily basis.
Keep up-to-date log of what is in storecupboard and menu-plan from this.
Remind myself daily, of Martins Money Mantra:

    'Do I need it?...Can I afford it?'

Fingers crossed for everyone, for 2011.
  • Going to buy more meat from the butcher instead of the supermarket, better quality I have recently discovered. Will balance cost with more veggie meals in between.

Also intend to buy more seasonal produce again, as our health was never better when I used to do this (tended to eat more variety throughout the year, rather than the same stuff all year).

Finally, lower G.I./homemade snacks for the whole family. Loving the 'home made dips' thread at the moment. Phew, wish me luck :)
Healthy eating aim per day: 3 fruits, 3 or more vegetables, 3 low-fat dairy portions, 3 starch portions, 2-3 lean protein portions.
Weekly aim: to include 2 portions of fish (one oily), some nuts, seeds, beans and pulses.
