My son wants to upgrade from his Xbox Elite to the new, slim version and also get Kinect at the same time.
Dilemma: Game will give me trade-in for the console and wireless adapter BUT will not perform Data Transfer in store.
Options are:
1. Buy the new console and transfer cable. Bring home and transfer data. Return to shop to 'sell' old console and have £90 in credit.
2. Use portable hard drive to save data in the hope that it will transfer onto new hard drive. Exchange old console and receive new bundle using the trade-in value. Transfer the saved data.
Has anyone had experience of saving data and successfully transferring it to a new console. I do not want to risk compromising any data.
Many thanks in advance.

Real easy to do. Cable plugs into USB slot on the new console and has a connector you plug into the old drive. Fire up the new console, follow the prompts. No data is wiped from the old drive - you have to do that yourself later.
I had to buy a cable and sold it on Ebay the following day for £10 so it cost me £4 in the end.0 -
did you ask in game about trading in your console? ..
I know they did do it before. You bought a new xbox and then took receipt back and you got cash £100 instead, not really sure how it worked or if it was for release only.
Data cable can be rented from local blockbusters for £4.99 if you dont want to buy one.Started advent comps 04.12.2013

How much stuff has he got saved on the Hard Drive?
DLC can take up quite a bit of room so any USB will need to be quite substantial.
I've got 2 xboxes and use USB's to store game saves and gamertags and move them between them depending on which one I'm playing on.0 -
Remember that DLC, gamertag account and achievements are stored on the MS servers. The only things you need to transfer are are the game saves/music/photos.
I traded my son's elite in last week, and after discussing it with the store and him, decided it wasn't worth the hassle of getting the transfer cable. I gave him a memory stick and he saved some of the more important game saves to that. The rest he will just have to do again, but he was happy with that. He was able to get the DLC and recover the gamertag in minutes on the new console.0 -
Thanks for your replies. I have asked my son to check how much data he needs but he's too busy playing on the Xbox!
I don't mind about the Data Transfer cost too much but would prefer to receive the trade-in price off the new bundle. I have considered buying a 120Gb HDD and Cable from Ebay for not much more than the cost of the cable from Game. Will have to consult with my son.0 -
Game are expensive, you are much more likely to get a better deal elsewhere.
(I mean the cable etc).
Their trade-ins also give you peanuts compared to what you can sell for elsewhere.0
