Cost of driving

Hello there,

I would just like peoples advice please. I currently own a 1.4 petrol grande punto, and i am traveling approx 50 miles a day to and from work. I am currently putting £45 a week in my car due to ridiculous fuel prices!!!

Would i be better with a diesel car? some people are telling me that me 1.4 puto is economical as it is!!!

Thankyou

Stephen

my 2.0 litre clio sport chewed through £220 a month in fuel

My diesel does the same mileage if not a bit more at times and i spend £80

Diesels are very good on longer journeys. Around town whilst better they are not leagues ahead

Yes get a diesel as soon as, probably halve the fuel cost.

    * yaris 1.4 diesel, fiesta/corsa can get 60mpg and has car tax of around £35 a year

Well i would have loved to have kept the clio given it was rapid and had plenty of power (200bhp) but it was costing an arm and a leg to run

Then along comes my little boy

I'm rolling in a 1.9dci Renault Laguna 2. Paid £1500 quid for it and its a lot of car for the money.

I get roughly 600 miles to a tank and the VED is £85 per 6 months i think

  • Wow 200bhp, no wonder it was costing a lot haha! the road tax is a good point, £35 is really cheap! i think im paying £66 per 6 months!!! does insurance cost more for diesels?

    Changing car will cost money.

Try changing your driving style first? Stick to 60 on motorways, empty the car of anything that needn't be in it, accelerate slowly, anticipate slow downs by dropping off the gas pedal etc. There's some good tips in an article on the site.

(mind you, I contravene all the tips, I just want to get there quicker, and I accept that I pay a little more in fuel to do so).

I would check your car first, and assess what way you're driving. I'm in the V6 for winter, and driven cautiously, I'd go through £40 doing slightly less mileage than you per day...
If you're doing a lot of town driving, you'll use more fuel, weight in car, tyre pressures, etc.

Not usually, it's usually the reverse i.e cheaper

i actually enjoy my diesel more than the clio. it was nice having 200bhp on tap but you couldn't use the car properly. now i just sit back and enjoy the drive and i feel much more relaxed when i drive

  • Thankyou for your help everyone!

I now have to prepare for my journey to work!!! haha

I will try and stick to 60 on motorway and stay behind a nice big truck (slip stream) haha
  • Yes more efficient way of driving will get a bit more mileage but the diesel is best in the longer term for your mileage. Oldish diesel cars 5-10 years old doesn't cost too much more than a petrol, you will save this money by spending less on fuel. Insurance is probably compariable to petrol.
