Winter sun - where should we go??

Hi everyone,

we are planning to go away this time next year for around 10 days. I have 2 children - they will be 6 and 8 (nearly 9) then. We were thinking of the canaries, but the weather seems a bit hit and miss. We have been to Tenerife and Lanzarote at this time before and there were a mix of good and cooler days. I then looked at cape verde, but it seems as though it will be rather windy!?! Can anyone recommend a destination suitable for a family, but that will be guaranteed warm enough for sunbathing, swimming in the pool etc. I feel a but dubious about Sharm/Egypt due to the constant reports of stomach bugs.

Have I missed somewhere?? (Apart from long haul?)

Thanks for reading - any thoughts welcome!

Gambia? About a 6 hour flight (I think), no time difference as directly south and nice and hot - high 20s, low humidity, virtually no chance of rain or cloud. Brilliant place for a winter getaway. Nice and cheap for food&drink there too.
  • I was going to suggest Sharm, but then I read all of your post...but really, you shouldn't be totally put off. We have been to Sharm twice in the last year and didn't suffer from any tummy trouble at all. If you choose your hotel carefully by reading recent reviews, eat all inclusive rather than taking risks at lots of different restaurants, and take basic precautions like not drinking tap water or eating salads or fruit which may have been washed in it, you should be fine. We stayed at the Kiroseiz three corners which is lovely and very clean.

    Hi again,

we were planning to be away for just New Year - leaving after Christmas really. I have not got a fixed budget in mind - will just be looking for the best price on whatever we decide to do!

I had not thought about Gambia - I will have a look at that now. I'll also have a look at the hotel recommended in Sharm. I'm sure that if you pick a good hotel it should be OK - it is just that I know a few people who were ill - it just kind of puts me off a bit. My husband would like to go though - its only me!!!

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

As a confirmed fan, I lived there for 2 years and have been back on holiday many times, I'd always recomend Mexico. Cancun is very lively and if you look hard there can be some bargans, and the coast to the south known as the Riviera Maya is just stunning.

Ah 814man- I also share your love of mexico - we have been several times - all pre kids though. It is the flight duration that puts me off nowadays (small kids in tow!) We have been to the Riviera Maya too and have wonderful memories of it all!!
