Time to fix TV aerial?

Options
Just wondered really....

My TV aerial has broken (the one on the outside of the building). I think it must have got damaged when we had some bad weather. I now can't receive any television at all either analogue or digital. I have tried everything I can and think it MUST be the aerial connection. I can't get into the loft to have a look because it's locked.

I reported it four and a half weeks ago..my LL doesn't seem in any hurry to fix it. I gave in two days before Christmas and bought an indoor aerial, because I live on my own and the idea of Christmas without any TV was quite depressing. It works but it's not great.

What is an acceptable time to wait for it to be fixed? I know TV isn't a 'right', but it's been working up until now. I am due to move out on 28th Jan (my LL wants to move back in herself) so I don't feel like making a big fuss, but it's still annoying.

The TV may be of no concern to your LL, you would need to check the inventory to see if it is part of the contract (doubtful). Things like heating, hot water etc are mandatory to be fixed but a tv is an item of personal use that is more often than not excluded from inventories. You should have pestered him when it broke, to at least get a straight answer as to whether he was going to fix it or not.
Its you who has to miss out in the mean time so if it bothers you that much repair it.

Well, you can either make an issue of it by reporting it in WRITING and demanding a timescale for the repair, quoting all the previous occassions it's been reported, and then following the Shelter advice on LL's failing to repair.

Or let it go. You have some TV (albeit poor quality), you're moving out soon. If you rock the boat it might affect the ease with which you get your deposit back and/or any references you might need from the LL in future.

    Your choice.

ps - 'acceptable' or reasonable period of time? I'd expect a non-urgent repair like this within 2 - 3 weeks, though personally I'd have had someone round in a week or so depending on their availability.

Thanks...I did say I couldn't get in the loft to have a look, because it's locked (by the LL). So yes, it bothers me but I can't actually repair it.

I was told that it would be fixed, it's just taking a long time, that's all. I wondered what other people thought....well, now I know.

Thanks G-M, that was the sort of answer I was looking for.

I'm letting it go, anyway, only a few more weeks here. Even if I can only watch BBC for now :)
  • We had this on our property (we rent one - we both had a house before we married) - and we were told we were under no obligation to fix it, but as we're nice landlord, we got a chap out to do it within a few days, and the tenants were pleased with such service :)

In the short term if you have internet, can I suggest you use iplayer or http://www.tvcatchup.com/ to watch your favourite tv on?
