Mauritius advice?

We usually don't venture far for holidays (- unless it's to take in a Miami Dolphins game- yawn!) and we are not particularly sun worshippers. We have never "done" a beach holiday
However, just once, I would like to try a luxury, chill out, do nothing holiday. Mauritius comes highly recommended, and one of my most trusted contacts recommends The Oberoi. Having looked at it on-line - that's where I want to go....
We're completely flexible outside of April and November which are two busy work months for me. Any recommendations on travel companies (or can it be diy?) and times to go?

We're going back to Mauritius in March having been there in 2009. The flight is 12 hours from London (direct with BA or Air Mauritius) or via Dubai with Emirates. I'd recommend going for the BA or Emirates flights, as the Air Mauritius reviews aren't great.
Drinks in hotels can be expensive, so if you like a drink it's probably worth looking at somewhere that does all inclusive. We've stayed at Le Victoria and Shandrani - both part of the beachcomber group - I wouldn't hesitate returning to either, but we found the 'resort' feel at Shandrani (and the fab all inclusive) suited us better. Have a look round loads of different resorts because there really are some amazing hotels!
The best times to go for warmth and lack of rain are April/May and September/October.
We've booked our packages independently as had a stack of airmiles to use - but were able to negotiate prices by calling different agents.
Hope this helps0 -

I managed a week in Mauritius and frankly that was about enough.
If all you require is a beach holiday in a remote resort with heavy security in a country with a dull capital with little of cultural or architectural merit and an overwhelmingly poverty-stricken population living in ramshackle accomodation then Mauritius is fine.
But there are far more interesting places that can offer you the beach and much, much more.
It's not that Mauritius is bad but it's just not worth all the effort of going there to be cocooned in a resort hotel.0 -
Have to agree with Nobjocki here. Having been to Mauritius I would suggest that there are nicer, easier to get to, better value and quite frankly more interesting options for what you are looking for. The Riviera Maya in Mexico springs to mind from my recent experience but I'm sure there are lots more.

We did 2 weeks on Mauritius in October 2008. We hired a car and got out and about and thought that the best bit of the holiday.
Port Louis wasn't great but we loved the rest of the island. Our best day was driving aroud the North Coast of the Island taking in the views and sights.
Povery is rife, but tbh we found the locals very very friendly and never felt threatened at all.Hark at you going all strict
