Incorrect Info

I carried out a credit search on myself recently as I am hoping to move soon and will need to get a higher mortgage.
When I did the search however, I had a barclaycard listed for me at an address I have never lived at, know who lives there, or even visited. I did have a Barclaycard years back but paid it off before I bought my first house.
It's showing as £19 in credit and statements and a card once the old one expired will no doubt have been sent to this address.
It was late at night when I did the search, so I sent barclaycard an email complaining about this and asking them to ring me.
They sent me an email back advising me that e-mails sent from there site weren't secure and I should ring (Why let you e-mail from their site if you have to ring anyway?). I got annoyed and told them that as it's their mistake they could ring me. They tried once when I was at work, didn't leave a message and sent me another emailing telling me to ring them.

I've got the hump with them now and sent another e-mail telling them to treat my e-mail as a complaint, that I now refuse to speak to them over the phone and any correspondance can now be done in writing.

Does anyone know where I stand on this - Is it a serious issue that they have put my details against an incorrect address sending out statements and a new credit card?
What's the best way to deal with this? Had they just apologised and put things right, I would have been happy. The fact that they don't seem to be bothered and have done nothing to resolve it, I now want to take it as far as I can.

Anyone work in finance who can give advise would be appreciated.

Get them to phone you again, or find a free number to call them on.

You want to take it as far as you can, apart from talking to them over the phone?
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.
  • I suggest you put your complaint in writing. Head the letter Complaint so they are aware that you are making a formal complaint and not just a general enquiry.

I don't know how you do a credit search on yourself unless you do it as a business but you can get a copy of your credit files for £2 each.

Currently, credit files show recent activity on your credit cards so you should be able to see if there has been any activity recently. It is, of course, possible that the entry applies to someone with a similar name and has incorrectly been entered on your file. You have the right to enter a comment on your file explaining the situation until the matter is properly resolved.

Thank you - I've emailed in a complaint and asked them to sort. I have explained that I am not happy to phone in at my own expense and that I'm less happy that they have my details against a random address. There is no other person in the UK with the same name as me so it can't even be mistaken identity.
I had a look at my credit file by paying £2 to experian, which I mistakingly called a credit search.

    . . . I've emailed in a complaint . . .

It is better to send formal complaints by Recorded Delivery post so that you can confirm receipt using Royal Mail's online tracking service. Should it become necessary to provide evidence of your complaint then a Recorded Delivery receipt will be accepted as good evidence.

There is an error on your file, possibly an error their end or someone who has gotten your emails and committed an identity fraud against both you and Barclaycard. You contact them, provide all necessary info and they look into it and get it corrected.

However you appear to be being an unco-operative !!! and seem to have become the biggest problem that'll stop this getting involved. You can either start talking to barclays and get it sorted out, or let this possible fraud continue unchecked, barclay card won't really care too much as it's only your credit rating that gets trashed. And now that they have an email trail that you KNOW about it if you go on to do nothing to resolve things they'll be well covered.

tbh if you keep this up and I was Barclays I'd be closing your accounts and ejecting you as a customer, leaving you to sort out the pieces yourself.

I can't see that you have any grounds for complaint at the moment. It is common practice for companies to not divulge personal information by email, due to the security issues.

They haven't stopped you from phoning them, as far as I can tell? Nor have they refused to make the amendment to your credit file? They've just asked to speak to you.

Forget the complaint. You'll sound fairly daft if you send that complaint in.

If you are concerned about the cost of phoning them, there are plenty of geographical or freephone numbers on this website - just search for Barclays and pick the most appropriate one.
