Exiting Sky Package for BT providing phone?

I currently have Sky TV, Unlimited Broadband and Phone (Evening and weekend calls free) all on a package for £26ish a month (and my line rental on top obv!)

I am thinking about moving my calls back to BT so that I can have caller ID on my telephone, as apparently having my calls going through Sky I can not utilise this function on my phones.

My questions are:
1. Any one have any idea on the costs involved?
2. Is it better to move my broadband to BT too?

BT are obviously saying that moving my calls to them wont affect my Sky package in a negative way, Sky can't tell me as their customer services seems to be run by monkeys!! :D

  • 2. That depends on whether you have Sky LLU or Sky Connect. The former will generally outperform a BT based service with ease. The latter is dreadful.

One way to find out is to put your phone number into the availabiliy checker at www.samknows.com and look down the right hand side to see if Sky LLU is at your exchange. The other way would be to ask Sky.

Ignore any nonsense from BT about "Oh, we'll be faster" or "We'll match your speeds". Once in contract, those were just words.
  • Hi, I would welcome any assistance with the following response from Sky that I have just received as I look to exit from Sky for our home phone and broadband. Previously we were with Talk Talk on a BT line and now they're telling me that Sky own the line -

Thank you for contacting Sky Help Centre.
As your Sky Broadband and Sky Talk services are part of our Sky Voice and Broadband Network (SVBN) I am unable to generate a MAC.
This service cannot be cancelled with a MAC
SVBN is a Local loop Unbundled (LLU) service which means that Sky owns the line. To change this type of service to another provider simply contact whomever you would like to move to and ask them to take over the line. Your new provider will deal with the whole change over and will advise you on how.
I hope this information has helped with your enquiry.

I had simply asked for terminating the phone line and broadband with Sky and thus I believe I require a MAC code to move my broadband to another provider.

However, I've just tried signing up with Primus on the £7.99 pcm package (home phone only) and couldn't get past first base because the line isn't with BT!!

Does anyone have any experience of how to get through all of this?

    Many thanks for any assistance.

If your line has been LLU'd by Sky (which it appears yours has), then you can't go direct to another LLU service-you have to take your line rental back to BT first on a minimum 12m line rental contract. Ask them for a 'return to donor' (there is no charge for this). Ironically for you, Sky is about the only company that seems to be able to accept direct migrations from another LLU service. Once your line is back on the BT network, you can apply for broadband with the ISP of your choice-this of course means you will have about 10 days downtime.
You've discovered the pitfalls of allowing an LLU takeover.

Normally if you do not have Sky Talk your BB costs increase by £5pm - this would seem to cancel out the benefit of having Caller ID for free.

It's not too clear from your post but are you paying Sky or BT for line rental?
