XBOX 360 - 3 red rings and new game stuck inside!!!

Son's XBOX 360 just stopped working and displayed 3/4 rings around the switch as red instead of green :( New PDC Darts 2010 game he got on Xmas day is inside. Turning on and off and reconnecting all leads has made no difference. It is out of warranty :(

I understand this is a fairly common fault but does anyone know how much it costs to fix? Also is there anyway of getting the game out before it is fixed? May not be worth repairing, cost depending, as have had it a while but would like to at least salvage the game!!

Thanks

Yes. Firstly you'll need a paperclip or similar. You need to remove the faceplate. Takes a good tug but they're designed to be removable. Depending on what DVD drive is in it, there's two methods to manually eject it from then on.

    Here's the instructions from Microsoft:

    same as what i posted
  • My brother recently had the same disappointment.

The repair charges are far too high. It can be almost as cost effective to buy a new (next model of) console once they are out of warranty, which is what their support guy actually advised us to do when I phoned.

If you have the 'old' style console, buy a new cheap arcade version which will be cheaper than the repair cost, and attach your existing hard drive to it.

Alternatively, if you buy a new 'slim' console, get the cheaper 4GB one, and you can still put your old hard drive into it by removing the casing.

Mine did the same thing on Christmas day. I used the towel trick and got it to work again. You basically unplug the xbox from the tv, but leave it plugged into the power, wrap it up in 2-3 towels and leave it on for 15 mins. then switch it off for 20 mins to let it cool down. Switch it on again and it should work ( but unfortunately its only a temporary fix and it will most likely break again at some point)

apologies for the uber obnoxious American kid in the video, he's nothing to do with me thankfully.

An easier variant of the 'Towel Trick' is to stop the 2 exhaust fans from spinning by pushing 2 thin objects through the grill temporarily .. a pair of screwdrivers will do it!

Obviously this will mean the XBOX will over-heat .. but that is exactly what you want! Carefully watch the front and the 3 red rings will change to 2 after a few minutes , when that happens pull the power plug from the back of the XBOX and let it cool down for about 20 minutes.

Remove your 2 screwdrivers , switch on your XBOX and it should start to work OK .. at least for a while.

As Toe-Jam says though , this is usually only a temporary fix sadly.

its debateable whether this will invalidate the warranty
