New Job.....need some help with benefits

My partner and myself have been unemployed and now i have been offered a job. I am taking it regardless of the money problems it will entail due to being selfish and also because there will never be a right time and this is the sort of job i want working at a school and getting similar holidays to my daughters hence needing very little, if any child care.

My partner gets income support (doesn't sign on at the job center). I get CTC and CB. HB and council tax benefit.

Although i know i will start when the girls go back, i know very little else. This is due to shock, how many others have been offered a job on Xmas eve when they haven't even known they were being considered for the post. (it had been advertised in school and papers and had two applications who were not deemed suitable).

Will we get any help with the two months we have too wait till my first wages? Or will we have to struggle on with the child benefit to live on....its so scary....

I believe it will be full time, more than 16 hrs.

you will need to apply for working and child tax credits straight away

If you have been claiming IS for more than 26 weeks or any other mean tested benefit then you may qualify for a job grant of £250 and 4 weeks housing benefit.

If you are going to be really short of money while waiting for your tax credits etc you may be able to claim a Crisis Loan

Congrats on getting a job by the way
  • yes we have been claiming for more than 26 wks. So its gonna be a struggle but luckily we have no outstanding bills,no credit cards to pay in fact only the gas ,electric and rent and council tax. Looks like we are going to be in debt for the first time in ages :-(

Go to the job centre and ask to see an adviser, they can fast track all of your tax credit applications for you and may be able to arrange for a 4 week run on for your IS to continue whilst you are waiting for your pay. (You need to check that, I know they do it for single parents but not sure about couples)

When you go in, take all of your outgoings with you as you may still be eligible for help with the rent and council tax, ring the electricity and gas companies and explain the situation, that they will be paid but you could do with a reduced payment for the next couple of months.

Congratulations on getting the job :T its not selfish, its about taking the opportunities when they present themselves.

Is there certain criteria to meet for this? I asked about it and was told there was no such thing? (sorry to butt in on someone else's thread)

It shows that your HB and CT will run on for four weeks and there are other benefits available to everyone.

Seconded. Congrats on the job and I hope it goes well for you. There's many on this board who should follow your example but instead would rather whinge about there being no jobs.
  • Why do you have to wait 2 months until your first wages arrive ?
As you are starting right at the beginning of the month, you should hopefully get paid something at the end of the first month, it depends when their cut off dates are and when your monthly payday falls.

Congratulations on your new job, hope it works out for you xx
Google is my friend ..... :j
  • I am only assuming its two months. However as my sister also works in a school, same council and she waited two months. Not sure of the cut off date but they get paid the last Friday of the month so hopefully it should be a whole months first pay as well.

I have just tried the directgov webb site and did all the sums and info as a min.wage and 39 hours it gave us a child tax, working tax and then it said for my partner £65.45 per week for job seekers allowance?????????? i think i have filled this in wrong.

I tried to do the council tax and housing benefit but missed out the children tried to go back and lost it all ....

Thank you on the job congrats....i am afraid i didn't even know there was a job going at the school and i keep asking if their was any jobs going, went on the PTA and became a governor and also helped out with the reading and school trips... i had missed the newspaper adverts and if it was advertised at the school i also missed it but luckily they didn't miss me.

Its very scary having to be in charge of proper bills, as they are normally paid for us. I can now begin to feel normal again and moan about rent and council tax..lol

    Thank you all again.
