I've not used secondary glazing, but my brother used to have it in his dental surgery and seemed to think it was ok.
I personally wouldn't go for the clingfilm stuff on sash windows - I use it on a small window in the back room, and it's ok, but if you knock something against it the cheaper stuff does break quite easily. The main problem is once it's on it's there for the duration, and even in winter I like to be able to throw the windows open occasionally to air the room. You can't take the plastic film off to open the window then reseal it again, so you'd have to leave it on until it got warm enough to not need any more. The glue stuff is also a beggar to get off once it's been up a few months.

At the moment with my sash windows I've gone for draught proofing and heavy lined curtains. Not great, but the least worst option given the current state of my finances.
I've also seen somewhere recently (one of the papers I think) where internal shutters done properly are quite effective.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend any companies in Gloucestershire to supply and fit either upvc or wooden double-glazed sash windows? We need to get two windows replaced next year.

Also, is anyone able to give us a ball park figure as to what a reasonable cost for normal-sized sash windows would be? We will be getting a range of quotes anyway, but it would be useful to have an idea of what reasonable and excessive quotes would be.

    many thanks,

    Al

10 years ago I went for cheap double glazing. After a few years the windows did not seal correctly and some would not even close without a makeshift crowbar.

Next time around I will go to wickes, then get someone to fit the larger ones for me, and possibly the smaller ones too.

Ice on the inside of your window is nothing to worry about: I have dg and found a little ice on inside the other day.
I think dg is overrated to be honest. Didn't make much difference when I had mine installed.
Draught seal tape and curtains is cheaper.

You can have some glass DG Panels made up and fit them with cheap Easyfix secondary glazing clips for 4mm glass/plastic from ebay.
Why not try it with one window first?

My parents have sash windows. My dad who is a builder, has made secondary glazing panels from panels (some type of perspex I think rather than glass) which has a trim round to fix into and match windows. These can be popped out and stored under a bed once the weather is better. When you go to their house, you notice the difference immediately.

You could do some traditional style shutter with an extra layer on insulation built in.
