Honeymoon in Taormina, Sicily

Hello!

My H2b (altho he will be my hubby by then!) and I are off to Sicily at the end of April for our honemoon. We are staying in Taormina, and have our hotel booked.
Apart from Mt Etna, is there anywhere else we should do/see whne we are there, or recommendations for places to eat etc?

Thanks!

  • Hi, I used to be a rep for Thomas Cook in Sicily and it is wonderful. With Mt Etna you can go to the top...the very top but it cost about 50 Euros each extra, but the scenery is amazing, but freezing in Feb even if active. It depends how long you go for. Sicily is a huge island. I would definitely recommend:
The Aeolian Islands, where they have mud baths and the erupting Stromboli volcano.
Agrigento for its Greek valley temples
Syracuse for its amazing Greek sites
Palermo the capital for the catacombs under the city and fantastic history and traffic.
Cefalu for the sprawling beach en route to Palermo.
    Corleone for its !!!!! birthplace.
Savoca and Forza d'Agrò, near Taormina were used in The Godfather.
A well know band member has an amazing luxury hotel on the hilltop in Taormina...forgot his name, and also in the town it has the thinnest street in Sicily/Italy.
Catania is good for nightlife, and a short cruise, but is full of pickpockets, esp motorbikes and they grab your belongings through any open windows.
Temp will be fairly cool about 65-70, whereas Jul is 95. The view from the plane over Etna is wow and well....you will love it. From Catania to Palermo on coach reckon on 2 and a half hours.
    Enjoy, it is fantastic.

Thanks for the info! Its Jim Kerr from Simple Minds that has a hotel, the Villa Angela I think - we are not staying there but it looks amazing!
I think we might spend a couple of days touring about, and the rest just locally so your info is a great help! :T
  • I recommend Syracuse above all else, unless history doesn't interest you. Make up a picnic and make your way around the enormous number of preserved treasures!

I think shaunskankdog has pretty much covered everything, I loved Syracuse too.

You might like to consider going down to Giardini Naxos (not far from Taormina) on a weekend evening as all the Sicilian families come out for La Passeggiata. THe BEST people watching ever!

we stayed in Giardini Naxos and the whole area is a brilliant place, perfect for a honeymoon I'd say.
