Door locks freezing up in sub zero temperatures

I've heard of a couple of cases recently of house door locks (and car door locks) freezing solid so that occupants can't get in or out.

Does anybody have any good professional advice on anything you can do to treat house door locks to prevent this happening, especially if you risk being either locked inside or outside your house?
