Hi All,
I'm looking to back up my computer (will be my new years resolution!) so am looking for the best portable hard drive to use (must be idiot proof!) and was wondering if anyone had seen any good bargains in the sales.
Thanks in Advance

IF you want "portable" then they tend to be slightly more expensive, however desktop external drives can be had for about £45 from amazon and others, I use Seagate and Iomega. They are 18months and 30 months old and (touch wood) have been reliable.
Look here and also look at other posters suggestions http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=1tb+portable+hard+drive&!!!!!googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=5693235486&ref=pd_sl_5tlqjxsao2_b4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . I like the Buffalo stuff, still not been able to break one! Fully Encrypted with a 2 year warranty too! Certainly not the cheapest, but quality is there, can be used as simple drag and drop, included backup software or normal windows backup.
Being 1Tb too makes future sense0 -
I'm also looking for the same - I decided on a Seagate, and then saw loads about early failure on the internet. So I looked at Westen Digital - again loads of stuff about early failure. so I looked at Lacie - nothing about problems, but they use Seagate drives. Help any advice?
I think it may be newer drives, I've never had a drive fail, apart from a Maxtor, which failed just outside warranty.0 -
buy a hdd enclosure and then you can use any hdd you want ,
like these for 3.5" hdds

or for 2.5"(laptop) hdds

thiers not just akasa that do's them ,there are other that do them too ,the price ranges from a few pounds to about £30 and remember the price off a hdd to ,or you can use a old hdd if you have anythere or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -
Thanks - my problem is the drive size - my old drives are the size of most USB sticks these day's - Is there any reliable drives theses days or should I just ignore the reviews and pick one?0

It's worth keeping in mind that people are generally more likely to leave reviews of stuff when they have a bad experience (this applies to just about everything from hard drives to holidays).
I've been using the Seagate £50-odd pound 1Tb drive off Amazon for a year without problems, despite having dropped it at least once.
I wouldn't recommend it as an ultimate back-up device, though - I'd always use DVDs for that.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0
