Because your bank has to raise a claim, usually electronically, with the atm owner these cases can take 3-6 weeks in my experience, seldom less than 3 and i've never seen one in 10 days sadly. Often it depends on if the person you reported to raised the claim properly.
Not anymore - the new banking code states you get refunded within 48 hours until they finish the investigation.
If they don't believe you or find no problem with the ATM then they wii debit you back again.

Last year an ATM debited £300 from my account it didn't dispense. I rang Santander who told me to wait 48 hours, and indeed I did get the the money back in about that time. However, the ATM displayed an error message when it failed to dispense, so presumably the failure was logged internally and corrected automatically. If the machine thinks it actually dispensed the cash and hasn't logged the fault then investigations could take much longer.

But you should get the benefit of the doubt until the investigation is completed.

My brother today went to a Santander ATM tried to get £30 out, didn't dispense, got it back straight away... must be lucky I guess.

I've had a Nationwide machine fail on me before, with a Nationwide card. It got to trying to dispense the cash before it ended up retaining the card and shutting the machine down. Before it did, it created a balance adjustment for the account to add the money back it couldn't dispense but which it had already deducted.

It must have been a serious fault, as I went in the next day to get my card and was accused of using the wrong PIN number - which would have been impossible.

It depends on the situation. If the ATM suffers a fault and is aware that it is unable to dispence the cash it will reverse the transaction almost immediately.

If the ATM is not aware of the issue and thinks it has dispensed the cash correctly this will usually be corrected within 48 hours as the machine / staff notice a discrepancy in the amount paid out and available in the machine.

In some cases it is not possible to distinguish which transaction was not correctly processed which is when the customer has to advise they need the problem looked into.

No, this bit is not correct.

An ATM does not 'know' how much money it has left in it. It knows how much it should have left (i.e. the amount it had when it was last balanced less any withdrawals that have taken place since then), but cannot 'self-correct' in this way.

And as few - if any - ATMs are balanced every 48 hours, staff won't notice during this timescale either.

Corrections are most likely to happen either at the moment of the withdrawal, or after the customer has raised an ATM Dispute with their bank.
