Crack

I have lived in my house for 5 years. When I purchased it, I was informed that it is over an old coal mine. The survey said that there had previously been some movement on the house, but not in recent years. When I striped the wall paper when I moved in, I found a crack going from the ceiling to the top of the window. I thought that must be what they were talking about in the survey, however, today I found a crack from the top of the window down the inside of the frame.
1. Does this sound like I have movement on the property?
2. Who do I call to have a look at it? (Put my mind at easy or fill me with bad news)
3. Am I likely to be able to claim on my buildings insurance, or against the coal board. (I am worried as there is so much that needs doing on this house, I may never ever get on top of it).
Thanks for your help.

    how wide is the crack?
can you fit a coin in it? or your finger?
    Get some gorm.
  • Had that bit been wallpapered? If so, any idea how old the wallpaper is, and did it have a tear in it where the crack is?

We took off some wallpaper in our house and found a crack behind it. The wallpaper seems to date back to the 80s, and wasn't damaged, which indicates that our crack is pre 80s.

Obviously not a foolproof way of assessing cracks, and shouldn't be used instead of a professional taking a look, but it can give you an idea as to how old the crack may be and when it last moved.

I do quite like your signature hngrymummy.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • If the crack is internal only, then it is of little concern. Otherwise, have a look outside in the same place and post back
