Make sure you COMPLETELY remove whatever your using now (most have removal tools)
AVAST, AVIRA and MICROSOFTY SECURITY ESSENTIALS are the main 3 (personally I use Avira, I wouldnt use MSE):idea:0 -
See which you prefer here, Avast and AVG Free Edition are highly regarded

Or you could opt for an Internet Security Suite, which will take care of the firewall as well, I use Comodo Internet Security

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, free to download.

I would definitely suggest AGAINST AVG and COMODO (Although comodos firewall is excellent):idea:0

Agreed... it's simple, has good scanning detection rates, doesn't have lots of annoying stuff like antispam, parental control, kid control, network control, or other overly complicated stuff that makes a PC slow to a crawl!
Also I'd suggest Avast, again quite simple, light and does what it's supposed to.
Can you tell i can't stand the 'all in one protection' packages out there from Symantec, McAfee etc!)

There is certainly no need to pay for anti virus.
We use either avast or security essentials0 -
Thanks all
We have been using Norton 360 and found that good (not that i am a pro lol).
Most of you seem to like avast, does it protect against things like pop ups, hacking into banking details ect
?
Thanks

probably not the free version -- which is good enough for me -- but the paid-for version has a sandbox/security feature/rigsby1967 wrote: »Thanks all

You might wish to use NoScript add-on with Firefox too/
