Need to rebuild home network - is there a good online guide anywhere?

We have a home network which has grown like Topsy - it consists of an old win 98 (just used to store some images), 2 XP desktops and a Vista desktop. These are cabled, using standard ethernet cable and rj45 connectiions into a Belkin router which is connected to a cable modem (Virgin these days). There is also a wireless laptop running Vista and wifi. The main server is one of the two XPs (XP Pro SP2).

It all worked fine until the weekend when something went wrong, not sure what, maybe after an automatic overnight update but in any case the machines can no long see each other, although they can still get out to the internet.

Is there a good on line tutorial I can follow to rebuild the network, bearing in mind it is using several differing OSs. (my son helped me originally but he is no longer in the UK).
