Hi everyone, just to elaborate a bit more.

He was basically a friend of my wifes who we tried to help (couldn't afford to live by himself) and told him to feel at home. He rents a room, and uses the kitchen, bathroom etc.

We have helped him several ways, including getting a job (which he walked out on) lending him some cash to pay off debt collectors (which he spent) and let the rent slide for a month when he had no job.

As for the white goods, basically our washing machine broke just before he moved in, and he had nowhere to store them so we agreed to to use the cooker and washing machine that he brought. It solved two problems at once. He claimed to have had a gas fitter fit them, but we suspect not.

However he is not totally bad. He has good points, but we just cant cope with it anymore.

I think you just need to talk to him, explain that it is not working out and you need your own space (try not to make it personal and about him) and give him a reasonable amount of notice to try and find somewhere else.

Hopefully he will be gone soon - the sooner you can get him out (peacefully) the better...as you have enough other problems on your plate by the sound of it without him adding to them.

I would want to know where I stand re the fitting of the gas cooker if something goes wrong and it turns out wasn't fitted by a qualified gas fitter.

Ok so turning to practicalities. How long is reasonable notice, in peoples opinion.

Just a suggestion that might help - how about when you have the nice chat with him you raise the £400 but say that you will keep the appliances and that he can keep the £400 - sounds like a good deal for a cooker and a washing machine tbh!

Personally I would feel very uncomfortable with someone having so many weapons of that nature in my house even if they were drug and issue free! Are these legal? I'm not sure I would be getting any sleep!

The other issue I suspect, is that he has nowhere to go. Not really my issue, but I do care about people. Maybe I shouldnt!

Assuming he's a lodger which appears o be the case he has no rights. It's your home. You have the right to not feel intimidated in your home. 'Reasonable' notice varies from a week ti instant if you are in fear. Tell him to leave tomorrow if you can have people stay overnight with you to give you security, or if that's not possible, tell him to leave 'today'.

Where he goes is not your problem. He makes your life hell, he takes the consequences.

Read this thread. Very similar. It's a long thread, went on longer than it needed to but ended well....

I can't believe you did not check this person out before you let him into your home?

    Hi Everyone,

Like a bad horror film we have the lodger from hell. It has come to the point whereby we feel strangers in our own home.

What makes it worse is that there is no agreement in place. We just want him to go:

A little example of whats been going on:

Debt collectors knocking at the door for him, although I lent him over £400 to pay them off (which I haven't had back yet)

Selling our stuff to make ends meet.

Moving his latest squeeze in 24/7

    Drug driving his company car.

The problem is, he holds a grudge and suspect he may take it out on the house or animals. He also has quite a large collection of weaponry (machetes, crossbows etc)

I'm tempted to just give him 2 weeks and say keep the money, just stay away and let bygones be bygones.

Some of the appliances are his, but I can arrange to get them disconnected. We suspect he plumbed in the gas cooker in himself.

    Any advice appreciated.

He owes you money, steals your belongings, is doing a BOGOF on his rent (if he pays any), takes drugs and has a highly unusual collecting habit.
Change the locks before he goes off on one and murders you in your bed.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
