Really?? I must read different forums here as I can't say I've noticed any racist comments. Frankly I'd be horrified if I saw any and I find it really sad if people generally feel they can't identify their culture for fear of racist abuse. I'd hope that if there was any, the perpetrator would be promptly barred from the site

It's mainly in the discussion and debate boards. I'm sad and horrified about it too. :(

    Please point out these posts?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Don't point them out. Your post will be deleted.

I agree that they are prevalent on boards with Discussion or Debate in the title.
  • I found learning a few words of Arabic helps as well.
I always take a shawl with me especially for the markets, but with red hair and very pale skin I always get some hassle.
Luckily they usually think I am Russian so I can't understand any of it.

I noticed a post of yours has disappeared. Wish the same happened to the racism. :(

I'm Asian and I'm not sure if Asian clothing would help tbh because you would still get hassled by sellers. Yes, they are more comfy if you buy the cotton outfits (salwar kameez) because they are loose and light. For that reason, I would recommend salwar kameez esp if you go in July like we did-never again!!

I went to Egypt last year (Cairo, Aswan Luxor and did the Nile Cruise) and I wore linen trousers, long skirts, tops etc...nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't think to take any of my Asian outfits. To me, it would have been a bit weird in an Arab country but that's just cos I feel more comfy in 'English' clothing.

If you go into mosques, then yes, you do have to cover shoulders and arms but the security guys always have plenty of shawls for tourists and you do have to cover your legs.
If you're in the touristy areas, you really won't need any specific clothing but keep a shawl handy.
For asian outfits, Rupali online are quite cheap. They have stores too-nearest one to me is Bolton.

I've just come back from Abu Dhabi, which is conservative, I wore long sleeved tunics which ended just below mid thigh, and I put a pin in the neckline to be sure it was not too low, and then wide legged smart linen trousers and a long scarf, like shalwar kameeze with a dupatta. That worked fine everywhere. Its best not to wear a top without sleeves, but you could pop a long sleeved shrug into your bag, in case you feel uncomfortable. If you look as if you have made the effort to dress modestly then people usually respond accordingly. But a lot of the hassle in countries like Egypt is because you are a tourist. If you are blonde cover your hair for a quiet life, in my youth I spent a year in the Middle East and never went out on the street without a headscarf because it was just easier. If you go out alone then I would suggest wearing a headscarf wrapped like a hijab, as OP suggested, as if people think you are moslem then their attitude is different. Enjoy your holiday, and don't worry too much, you will be amazed how much tight clothing and bare flesh will be on show from other visitors, which will only make you look more modest.

I am a regular on the ''Debate'' board, and while racist posts do occasionally happen (usually by troll posters) I can assure you they are repulsive to by far the majority of posters, and we report them and we have an excellent board guide too.
  • Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who responded about the clothing issues :)

I'm strawberry blonde and umm, busty, so I think I'll err on the side of caution. Now to work out how to tie a headscarf lol!

Thanks again all, I'll report back :)
