Travel Insurance - Full Annual Cover- help!

Hi

I'm looking at getting annual travel insurance starting on the 01/01/2011 as on the 18/01/2011 I will be flying to New York and plan to go on other holidays throughout the year.

But I'm worried about the weather so want to get it as soon as possible, have done some quotes on compare and the cheapest is coming out as £20.80, I'm not worried about getting the cheapest one I just want to make sure im well covered! So what do I need to look out for and what companies are best?!

Any help is much appreciated

Many Thanks x

The one thing I would say is that the Iceland volcano could come back. I know that Columbus Direct were making a fuss about how they cover for volcano related cancellations, but probably other companies do too - make sure you get cancellations cover, and read reviews of companies.

I think once i'd found the cheapest policies i'd then read through them and see what they cover exactly and my next thing would be what are the excesses. If you can get a reasonable policy with excess waiver then i'd buy that one because the excess is per claim ie if your bag was knicked and you had your passport, money and camera knicked that could be 3 separate claims so therefore incurring 3 excesses. Its worth buying the excess waiver on an annual policy. I don't think i'd touch an annual policy for £20.80 i think it might be false economy if you need to claim.

I agree with Steph, I have an annual policy with insureandgo and always go for the excess waiver - it only adds a few quid and you'll be glad to have it if you have to make a claim. Also agree that a policy for under £21 is unlikely to give good cover. If you're planning to take more than two holidays, buying a cheap policy could be an expensive mistake. I'd also advise you to get the insurance sorted as soon as possible, you'll then be covered but you can get the policy to start on 18 Jan.

Do not get the policy to start on 18 January. If anything happens before that date you won't be covered. You need cover from immediate effect to cover for cancellation, bad weather, etc.
