have spent a little time getting a cheap webcam to work on girlfriends linux PC (ubuntu) - however the picture is very dark,
have tried Cheese to try to improve the quality but everyone still appears as silhouettes.
The same camera works pretty well in windows XP tho, so just wondering whether it could be graphic drivers or something else?

If it works, it is a bit unlikely to be drivers, things tend to either very work or very not work.
With video display in (non cheese) other apps, I found that a context menu (right click, maybe on the border or maybe on the video view itself) contained brightness and contrast settings. Oh yes, very clever I thought. I wish I had found out earlier (!)
good luck
