Pay as you go Gas

Options
I just can not keep up with the cost. It's costing me £5.00 per day to heat the house for approx 6 hours on and off,I hardly cook with it and I have just 5 radiators in the entire house that run off it.I have tried various utility companies and all are more or less the same cost.Is this normal ?? I am putting gas on rather than eat some of the time as I have arthrits in my hands and they get so painful if cold.

Its just ridiculous the cost of gas in this country,I once lived in the USA and my bill was £5.00 for a whole month !! work that out UK ?

I really feel for you, my son has a small one bedroom flat and the past few weeks, I have made sure that he has enough gas it is costing me 40 pound per week to keep his meter topped up, and he dosent owe the gas company any money. God knows how much it would cost if he did.

I am at a loss as to how it is costing so much since i presently pay £45 per month for gas and electric in a two bedroomed house.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Do you only top up when you're nearly out of gas? This may be causing you budgeting problems.

I had prepayment meters once and I always used to top up by the same amount once a week regardless of whether or not i had a lot of credit on there. This way, i had built up a lot of credit going into winter (a bit like on a DD plan) and i didn't have to worry when my CH came on and used a lot of gas.

Are you paying by direct debit though, as I have a three bedroom bungalow which is detached and my DD is only 30 pound a month, I think it will be going up soon.

The problem with PAYG gas is that in the winter you use several times more gas per week than in the summer. If you pay by DD this does not impact you financially but it shows in your bills. As has been said you need to top up more than necessarily in the summer months to give your self a buffer in the winter.

To give you an example my gas bills have been:
    April'09 - 182.10 - covers 31/12/08 to 1/4/9
    July'09 - 103.35 - covers 1/4/7 to 1/7/9
    Sept'09 - 32.26 - covers 1/7/9 to 25/9/9
    Dec'09 - 146.24 - covers 25/9/9 to 21/12/9

Based on those figures, if you paid the same amount every week it would be £8.92, but if I take the highest bill it works out at £14.00 a week, but that does not include the very high weeks because its average over 13 weeks.

  • £5 a day is same as me albeit on a credit meter, at this time of the year I would say thats normal for the weather conditions

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
