Advice re a potential flight cancellation

Hello

Just looking for some advice please

A relatives are due to fly out to New York from Heathrow Wednesday morning. Looking for some advice re what do do if flight cancelled etc..?

Never happened to anyone we know before hence asking on here

My first thoughts are

Phone up airline to check whether flight will go? I know this depends on the amount of snow etc whether cleared etc - If flight goes then great! If not will the airline automatically rebook?

The holiday (flight and hotel) was booked with a tour operator and they have insurance, if the flight does not go do should the tour operator of insurance company be contacted?

When there is adverse whether do airlines ever ask customers whether they want to cancel trip? (in case of severe delays) what happens then, can it be automatically rebooked?

Sorry if questions are obvious or somewhere on this board already, any advice appreciated

Thanks

In this instance, they would really need to speak with the tour operator (or travel agent, if it was booked through a travel agent) to gauge their advice. However also remember that depending on the flight time, the tour operator may not have a 24 hour duty office, and the travel agent may not be open.

Speak with either tour op (if booked direct) or Travel Agent (if booked via them) in advance, and see what they say is best.

    Regards.

    - phones will be very busy. I suggest using the airline website. These are first to be updated.

    - as previous poster said. Contact your tour operator.

    - yes quite possibly if the weather is bad for a long time (like pre-Christmas). It's not necessarily "automatically" booked. Each airline is different.

Whilst BA, VS, CO cancelled lots of flights on Monday, many schedules are getting back to normal. It seems the USA can cope a little better with snow than LHR.

    Thanks both for reply

I checked the Heathrow website as advised by the travel agent (a different branch as the other wasnt open), but it didnt show the flight.

I also checked the airline site which looked OK, and managed to get through thank goodness (wasnt on hold too long) they have said the flights are going, so thats great!

And yes the USA seem to do waaaay better than here!!

    Thanks for the advice
