I too thought that TRVs just diverted the flow of hot water to the other radiators in the system when they closed rather than shut the main boiler off.

One reason for the high'ish temperature from such a low boiler setting is that as the OP has had the heating on 24/7 since a week Monday the heat may have been building up and up. I'm assuming here that the house is well insulated etc.

The heat will not build up if the system is properly controlled by working thermostats. The boiler only fires when something in the system calls for heat, be it a room stat or TRV-no difference.

The heat will just build up in the rooms if the heating is on continuously i.e. the rads are always warm/hot, and the the house is well insulated.

Doesn't the boiler just heat the water until the pre-set temperature has been reached then it just switches off then when the water "cools" down it fires up again and so on.

That's how I thought my old Marathon boiler with its thermocouple poked into the burners worked.

Anyway I think I've managed to get the temperature/usage a tad lower now so it's on for 2.5mins and off for 7.5mins. and once we get past these low temperatures it'll be back to the 3 cycle ON-OFF.

    Thanks

It's very wasteful of gas to keep cycling the boiler like that, which is why I suggest you get the boiler stat and the general controls sorted ASAP-no boiler should be without a programmer or (at the very least) a room stat these days.

Not wishing to prolong the thread but the boiler does have a thermostat as it turns off when a certain temperature is reached then turns back on to maintain that temperature setting e.g if I turn the thermostat knob (on the boiler) to #3 the boiler turns on, heats the water up to a certain temperature corresponding to the #3 setting then maintains the water at that temperature. I also have a 7 day, 24 hour programmable timer which I use when I want the CH to come on (and off) at certain times of the day the timer also has an ALL setting where it's "on" continuously. The only item I don't have is a room thermostat, that's all.

    Anyway thanks again.
