When I put in a CD or DVD, my system just doesn't recognise it. Any idea what I can do? Thanks.

Eject the drive. Get a cotton bud. Place the tip of the cotton bud on the round glass lense and rotate it a few times. Usually they just get a build up of grease on them.0

take it you are saying that the drive period doesnt regonise it when you click on the drive letter in my computer rather than autoplay?
also tried checking the drives properties and troubleshoot from there such as driver is working ok first of all.0 -
GAH
Stop.
Go to device manager, you can access this by either go to Control panel, System, Device Manager or search Device Manager on the start menu.
Next to the DVD/CD's does a yellow warning /question mark appear next to the icon for DVD drive with a code 21/39?
If so it is usually a "lowerfilters / upperfilters" registry problem, Browntoa was right, Microsoft has a auto fix if its that or you can edit the registry to delete the DVD/CD lowerfilters and upperfilters.

Hi Guys, tried everything above but still nothing. As regards LASTCOLDHOT's suggestion, I have opened Device Manager but there's no question mark or anything against DVD/CD rom drives. Not confident enough to buy from Ebay (as suggested) and instal myself. Do you think I will need to take it into a repair shop?0
