Renting a house on an 6 month AST basis since July 2009. We have renewed twice now, and in November we paid the agents fee of £85 to extend the contract for a further 6 months.
We have not signed the new contract that they sent us in November. There is no reason for this, we just haven't done it yet.
Where do we stand? I'm curious. Are we on a rolling contract until the new contract is signed?

I know, it's shocking. They originally wanted £275 or something ridiculous like that. We paid the fee as the letting agents are b**tards and would probably have served notice had we not.
I'll sign the contract in the New Year I think. When I find it. I find it odd that the LA haven't chased it up with us.0 -
The agents can only serve notice if the landlord instructs them to.
Assuming you are a 'good', regularly-paying tenant, most landlords would rather keep you on a periodic tenancy than lose you and have a month or more without rent, plus the costs of finding a replacement. The agent, of course, doesn't care about this (in fact they actually make more money by finding the LL a new tenant) so their concern is just the renewal fee for a new contract.
Why not contact your LL direct, explain, and see if the LL is happy with the current periodic arrangement?0 -
Agree with the above: Agent is just trying to generate fees.
He may be charging LL also!0
