Setting up HD TV with computer

I have connected my new Sony HD tv to my PC via a HDMI connection and I have all of the sound coming through my tv. I have a nifty surround system on my PC and thought that if the TV was switched off, I would then get the same through my computer speakers. THis is not the case.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? Better still, could I have the sound through my pc speakers rather than the TV?

Many thanks in advance

I recently purchased a Sony Bravia TV and have my stereo connected to the TV.
In order to get the sound playing through the stereo rather than the TV I had to set an option for speakers to 'external'.

Unfortunately I'm not in front of my TV now so can't tell you exactly where this setting is or if that is the actual wording. It's something like setup or options> audio>speakers>external output...

Let me know if you find it, if not I'll post the correct way to find the option.

As Grezzit advised there may be a setting within the TV's menu to choose external speakers.
  • Thanks for replying. I've got my surround sound system connected to the soundcard on my pc via a jack (I think that's what it is called). There is an option on the TV to select external sound but this must be for a sound system plugged directly into the TV. I dont have a sound system plugged directly into the TV.

I'm thinking there must be an easier way than unplugging the TV from TV everytime I want sound to come out of my PC speakers. My husband recogns that the Duraband Home Cinema system wont work with the TV.

I must admit, I am really impressed with the Sony Bravia.

The setting should be in your PC's graphics card options = you should be able to turn off the hdmi audio and instead have the audio go through to your PC speaker setup. Do you have an AMD or an nVidia card?

Telling us what graphics card she is using would of helped a great deal. nVidia and ATI/AMD work differently. Also which windows version would also of helped.

I have had cards from both main manufacturers, currently using a nVidia card and I can find no option for HD audio other than there being 4 entries for nVidia HD audio in Device manager. I don't use HD audio out so have never had to mess around with it on nVidia. Sound options have no mention of nvidia devices so I don't know how you would switch it, if at all, on nVidia.

With ATI/AMD there is an option for where audio is output in Sounds and Audio Device properties on the Audio tab in Win XP. You need to change the default device from the ATI/AMD one to your regular PC sound device (Realtek HD Audio is commonly used) to get sound output from the Coaxial Digital connector if I remember correctly. You can have either PC audio or HDMI audio and not both I believe.

A bit more information would help a great deal to resolve your problem.
  • I have an nVidia card and I had the bright idea of updating the drivers. This completely messed everything up and the computer kept crashing etc. Had to system restore.

It's GEFORCE 8200 and G100. Not quite sure why both of these come up in my system manager.

As you can tell, I'm not the best at IT.

I have windows Vista 64 bit with the following coming up in my system manager, GEFORCE 8200 and G100.

It looks like it's an integrated nVidia graphics 8200 solution for AMD CPU's. The G100 is probably mis-detected. Check the properties of both to see if they are working. One could probably be deleted, I would guess the G100 but until you find out for sure don't delete anything!

Try opening the Sound and Audio devices in control panel and see what it says on the Audio tab. Check the drop down box under Sound playback, default device and see what options are available. On my nVidia powered system there is only my main audio device which is Realtek HD audio output. Whereas on my previous ATI/AMD graphics card there was another ATI device which could steal audio output if it was selected in the default device drop down box.

Look for a nVidia HD Audio device in Device manager under sound, video and game controllers.
Right click on that and select properties and then on the window select the properties tab. Then get the properties of the items shown and change the settings until it does something. Keep a note of what the settings were so you can restore them if needed! This seems to allow the disabling of HDMI audio out on my system but I cannot confirm it because it's not connected to anything.

If none of that works then I found this which might work as it seems to be a problem with nVidia drivers when using HDMI audio. No problems with ATI cards I don't think, because it can easily be disabled.

Might be a long shot but there might be an option in the BIOS

On my Nvidia ION board there's an option on the BIOS for Onboard audio or HDMI pass through.

Check the manual that came with the PC or motherboard (or post the make model of the PC here)
    Laters

  • Well, I sorted it. Not sure exactly how though. I think it's working because I pressed "set as default" in the sound system. Watched Inception to test it out! Brilliant film.

    Thanks for all your help.
