    Good idea.

It's worth noting that if you do borrow a CD, leave the product key screen blank and you can get a 30 day trial before it starts demanding a product key, just make sure that the edition you borrow is the edition you intend to buy (most likely Home Premium) and when you do buy it, enter the key from your shiny new copy. It's a little bit dubious to do this, but Microsoft aren't going to come after you for it.

Do not enter someone else's product key as suggested above, that is properly violating the licence agreement and will probably screw things up for whoever's key you used.

Chances are you'll end up wanting to format and go back to XP if the machine is as old as I am suspecting it is.
  • "" Do not enter someone else's product key as suggested above ""

My suggestion was for a hardware trial only. It was never intended [ nor would anyone lending him the key allow it ] not for everyday use on the key.

The point is you do not need to even enter the key to get a 30 day trial.

As soon as you activate a key, details of your hardware are sent to Microsoft as part of the activation, and if they differ significantly then it can cause issues once it's changed too much.

Then say what you mean, I clearly stated disconnect from the net. Who mentioned / even inferred the key should be misused
? certainly not myself, I said so in #11 and reinforced it in #13 the only person in the thread pointing to something less than honourable was yourself in #9

BTW thanks for educating me on how activation works, really appreciated, always room for me to learn new things, you know old~dog~new~tricks~not etc !

Do the words "" Such a well structured and thought out argument that has completely refuted every point I made down to the finest detail. Clearly I am 100% wrong here and must bow out in the face of your superior intellect and debating technique "" .. .. .. ring a bell ?

    [scouser]calm down! calm down![/scouser]

I actually agree with your post, apart from "Borrow a legal Win7 disk & product key". Which can be interpreted as suggesting that the OP install their friend's copy of Win7 with that product key. If this isn't what you meant then I apologise but would appreciate knowing what you actually meant. No insults were intended.

If it's just to test if the OS is compatible with their hardware, there is no need to enter a key and it is better if you do not.

As for my comments on the other thread that you quoted, not that it's really relevant to this one, you seem to forget that they were in response to a high quality argument, namely "Yeah [my post] was full of 5h1t.". Are you perhaps an alt of the person who posted that? Not that it matters as I'd forgotten about that thread long ago as I don't care enough to bear grudges.

And what is dishonourable about using that keyfinder? If you have a legit XP install but have lost the box/sticker with the key on it, there is nothing wrong with using it to recover your key prior to a reinstall.

For example you have to do it all the time with laptops as they always put the key on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop so when it comes to reinstall time all the ink has been rubbed off it!
  • Lum,

You've been in these groups long enough to know how they work. If you want to make a [ general ] comment you start a new thread segment, if however you reply directly [ personalised ] to a poster's nym or # number as I'm doing here (1) be prepared for technical debate and (2) you'd better know your subject matter, for the most part people here [ certificated & self-taught ] know their stuff. Your intervention brought nothing of substance or value to the O/P's understanding and your [ you are still bleating in #15 ] continuing ' rattle ' reference to the product key is a pointless exercise in the futility of repetition.

With or without the serial number if the the O/P follows my advice in #11 its unlikely s/he will ever get to the point where a serial number will be requested, the install will abort as the product does not meet minimum requirements, this was my intention, simply to help Wig avoid extra costs [ £100+ for the software alone #7 ] before good money was spent chasing the dream outlined in #1.

By the way of tectonic repetition, here is a reinforced bit of advice. You are on a Techie board now, if you, as is your right, choose to respond to a # number don't insult the individual # person - do a bit of work first and discover who you intend contradicting / teaching grandma to suck eggs.

Now unless the O/P comes back with further questions, I'll leave this thread, so feel free to post if it helps the O/P but please do avoid personalised comment. Have a nice day now !

    Wig, save your time.

When Win7rc came out a couple of years back, I tried it with an Athlon XP2400 and 768MB ram, just to see.

Yes, it ran but was more or less un-usable, and that's with no other programs loaded.
    Move along, nothing to see.
