Cant find out who gas supplier is

Options
I have now been in my flat for a year, and I still can't find out who my gas supplier is, despite phoning round various gas companies on several occasions.

When I first moved in and couldnt find out who it was I figured I would just wait til a gas bill materialised, but I have never received a gas bill from anyone. Someone must be supplying it as my gas central heating is fully functioning.

I have called the National Grid helpline, and I was told it was British Gas. But British Gas say it is not them and refer me to the National Grid helpline, and I just go round and round in circles.

I googled this and apparently it can be a problem with fairly new buildings (these flats were only built about 4-5 years ago).

Anyone have any advice?

if you were told by National Grid that BG was listed as your supplier you would have been given a mprn - meter point reference number if bg still say not supplier even after searching with that number then ask them why they recorded the fact on the national data base as it is the suppliers who give the date base the information.

Its probably the same company as your electricity suppler.
My advice, unless you’ve already tried, is to use a switching site and put BG as your current suppler and chose a new one. Your new supplier will ask you for an opening meter reading in 40 days time and your current supplier will reveal himself in the form of a final bill a few weeks later.
Keep regular meter readings, especially when prices change.

You need to bear in mind that swapping supplier could result in you receiving a final bill that covers the whole years consumption. Hopefully you have been putting money aside every month for when the bill does arrive.

As said, phone Natioinal Grid and ask for your MPRN and then quote this to BG and see what they say.

  • I did try the switching thing thinking the original supplier would show up along the process, but the switchover didnt go through because BG couldnt find out who the orginal supplier is. Its driving me mad. The gas must be supplied by someone, I dont understand why I have never had a bill.

Did the National Grid enquiry service provide you with an MPRN for your address? This is the key piece of information you need. Yo have already sais the NG said BG were the supplier so trying to switch to tem may fail. What you need to do is get them to track your account or the previous tenants account. Did the previous tenant not tell you who was supply the gas and elec?

  • No the previous tenant left no information of that nature, and the landlord I rent from doesnt have the info either. I will try getting this MRPN number and see if I can get anywhere. Thanx

When NG give you the MPRN and they again say BG is the supplier write a letter headed Complaint to BG. State you have been in contact a couple of times and each time you are told they (BG) are not my supplier but NG say they are.

  • Taken directly from national grid.
Your gas supplier is responsible for providing a meter and organising for your meter to be read. You should contact your gas supplier for any issues regarding your gas meter. You will find contact details for your gas supplier on your gas bill.

Find out more about who supplies gas.

If you do not have a gas meter yet or you cannot find the information on your bill, please call the M Number enquiry line on 0870 608 1524* and ask them for your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) which is the unique identifier for your gas supply point and also the identity of the current registered gas supplier at your premises.

*All calls to the National Gas Emergency Service and National Enquiry lines may be recorded and monitored.

  • you could be what's called in IGT (Independant Gas Transporter) if that's the case then NG won't know who your supplier is, I have access to the National Database (called XOSERVE) which is the same database that NG use, and I could search for you, I work for a major energy Co.
